“An embarrassingly large number of veteran lawyers hate what they do – and it’s having wide-ranging repercussions for the profession as a whole,” says attorney and legal educator Stuart I. Teicher.

Teicher will present “Igniting or Re-igniting the Passion for Practicing Law” and “How Millennials Will Change 3 Key Ethics Concepts” at the Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conference (WSSFC), coming to your computer screens Oct. 28-30, 2020.

It is possible, he says, to reignite – or ignite – your passion for practicing law. “If we pay attention to several key lessons, young lawyers across the world could avoid growing into veterans who hate practicing law. And if you’re a veteran who already hates what you do, it’s possible for you to find a way back to happiness.”

How?

The answers, Teicher says, are in the ethics rules. The rules aren’t merely a listing of prohibited activities. “Ethics rules create a wonderful guide for attorneys, a road map that leads us in our practice and helps us hone our skills so we can become highly effective attorneys.”

The rules show us how our role is critical to society in Comment 13 to the ABA Model Rules Preamble when it states, “Lawyers play a vital role in the preservation of society.”

One idea: have a mission that reinforces a belief in the nobility of the profession, Teicher says. In addition to a lawyer’s mission to serve clients, you can make it more tailored – like being committed to pro bono work assisting victims of domestic abuse, or even in making real estate transactions less burdensome. “It doesn’t matter what the mission, as long as you have one and it has an element of selflessness.”
