Feb. 16, 2022 – How important are the lawyers who volunteer their time on the State Bar of Wisconsin’s 15 committees?
“Without the service of members on our committees, I don’t know that we could function as effectively as we do,” said State Bar President-elect Margaret Hickey. “Service by State Bar members on committees is integral to the work that we do.”
Hickey said the committee work is as edifying as it is important.
“I have found the work always interesting, challenging, and educational. That’s part of why I recommend it to others.”
‘It’s Really Rewarding’
During her career, Hickey has served on a number of committees, including a 15-year stint on the Leadership Development Committee.
Hickey worked with the committee’s mentorship program to help put young lawyers in touch with mentors.
“It’s really rewarding, just in terms of making those connections,” Hickey said.
Serving on a State Bar committee is an example of doing well by doing good, Hickey said.
“It’s surprising how much I feel I’ve gotten back from serving on those committees.”
Many Ways to Get Involved
Hickey said her committee service played a role in convincing her to run for State Bar president.
“Making those connections both individually and professionally helped me understand that maybe I could do the job of State Bar president, so it gave me some confidence to run for the position.”
Hickey urged State Bar members to consider serving on a committee.
“There’s so many ways to get involved. Whatever your interest, my expectation is that there’s a committee that would fit your interests.”
