April 23, 2020 – Current (2020) State Bar of Wisconsin membership cards, which serve as documentary evidence of an individual’s authorization to practice law in Wisconsin, will not expire until Sept. 30, 2020, under an order issued by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

The State Bar requested the extension in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant economic hardships attorneys may face.

State Bar membership cards are issued each year after attorneys have paid State Bar dues and Wisconsin Supreme Court assessments.

Dues and court assessments are due by July 1 each year, with bar cards normally expiring by July 31 (new cards are issued in July).

However, this year, the State Bar is not imposing a late payment penalty unless dues and court assessments are not fully paid by Sept. 30.

Extending the 2020 State Bar membership card expiration date to Sept. 30 allows the State Bar to explore a potential installment payment plan for members experiencing economic hardships as a result of the pandemic.

But 2021 membership cards cannot be issued until the State Bar receives full payment of State Bar dues and court assessments.
