Wisconsin Supreme Court and State Bar invite the legal community to
celebrate Juror Appreciation Month in September
Jurors are at the heart of the justice system, and
during September judges, court staff, and attorneys across Wisconsin are
invited to extend a sincere thanks to everyone who has responded to the
juror call. The State Bar has joined with the Wisconsin Court System to
publicly acknowledge the critical contribution that thousands of our
neighbors make every month to ensure that everyone has the right to
trial by jury.
“The right to a jury trial is a fundamental
component of the American and Wisconsin justice systems,” says
Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson. “The willingness of Wisconsin
residents to serve as jurors is critical to preserving this right.
September has been designated as the time each year when we should make
the effort to publicly acknowledge and thank the contribution of
jurors.”
The Director of State Courts Office is working with
the court on articles and materials for the media, proclamations from
the Governor and Legislature and information posted on the court
systems’ Web sites. The Chief Judges Subcommittee on Juror
Treatment and Selection has created a packet of materials to assist the
circuit courts in developing a juror appreciation
program.
“Last year, Milwaukee County led the way with a
very successful county juror appreciation program,” says
Abrahamson. “We’d like to build
on that success statewide this year, and in future
years.”
