Judges and teachers participate in Justice Teaching Institute
Feb. 10, 2000
Secondary teachers from around Wisconsin applied to participate in
the state's first-ever Justice Teaching Institute, "From the Courtroom
to the Classroom," on Feb. 18 and 19 in Madison. Thirty teachers were
chosen to attend the intensive, two-day program, which aims to give the
teachers a variety of new tools for teaching about the courts and the
justice system.
As a condition of attendance, the teachers will return to their
districts and share the teaching strategies and materials with their
colleagues. They will also participate in Court with Class, a nationally
award-winning program that brings classes of Wisconsin high school
students to the Wisconsin Supreme Court each month to watch cases and
meet with a justice.
The Institute is a joint effort of the State Bar of Wisconsin's
Law-Related Education Committee, the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the
University of Wisconsin Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and
the Wisconsin Law Foundation. It is made possible through a grant from
Youth for Justice, an initiative of the Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
Members of the Institute faculty
Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson, and
Justice N. Patrick Crooks will teach at the Institute, and Supreme Court
Justices William A. Bablitch and Jon P. Wilcox will meet with the
teachers. Other instructors include University of Wisconsin Assistant
Professor Diana Hess, who regularly teaches at a similar institute at
the U.S. Supreme Court, and Professor Lee Arbetman, a national expert on
civic education from Washington, D.C.
Circuit court judges and attorneys from around the state also are
part of the faculty, including:
- Judge Joseph M. Troy, Outagamie County Circuit Court
- Judge Steven Weinke, Fond du Lac County Circuit Court
