Appointments, Elections
Michael Allen, Chicago 1984, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Wisconsin Bioenergy Council. He is owner of Energy Law Wisconsin, Sun Prairie.
Michael Carton, Ava Maria 2008, and Michael J. Gratz, U.W. 1994, have been appointed cochairs of the Milwaukee Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section. They both are with Boyle Fredrickson, Milwaukee. Carton, an associate, focuses on patent prosecution. Gratz, a founding shareholder of the firm, practices patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret law.

The Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP has received a Philanthropist of the Year award from Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity.
John “Duke” Welter, U.W. 1980, Eau Claire, received the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ West Central Region National Resources Award for his long-standing conservation work. A former member of the Wisconsin Natural Resources board, he works for Trout Unlimited, building regional watershed restoration efforts in the unglaciated or “driftless” areas of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Welter has been recognized nationally for his work on wetland and groundwater protection, public land and water access, and restoration. He fishes, but not nearly enough.
Pro Bono, Public Service
Quarles & Brady LLP recently began several public service initiatives. Frank Daily, Marquette 1968, and Julianna Ebert, Marquette 1981, honored firm pro bono coordinator Michael Gonring, Marquette 1982, by establishing the Milwaukee Justice Center Mobile Legal Clinic. The clinic is operated by Marquette Law School and the Milwaukee Bar Association. The firm established an ongoing scholarship through the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund in honor of former chair John W. Daniels Jr., Harvard 1974. The firm’s national corporate social responsibility program, Quarles Cares, launched a new anti-bullying initiative in October.
