Updated Citation Guide Explains New Format, Offers Helpful Examples

The fourth edition of the Wisconsin Guide to Citation is a quick and simple reference for lawyers preparing briefs for Wisconsin courts, articles for the Wisconsin Lawyer, and manuscripts for CLE Books publications. The new edition will explain how to use the new public domain citation format and provide several examples of how to cite Wisconsin opinions in both the new and the traditional format. Examples also are given of cites to cases and other authorities that appear in electronic databases, on CD-ROM, and on the Internet.

The Wisconsin Guide to Citation also shows how to cite Wisconsin legislative materials, such as statutes, session laws and acts, and Wisconsin administrative materials. An extensive section covers citing to decisions of Wisconsin administrative agencies and notes ways in which variations from the standard cite form for these decisions may be appropriate.

Also included are examples of cites to federal cases, statutes, and administrative materials, and to treatises, books, and periodicals.

Copies of the fourth edition of the Wisconsin Guide to Citation are $10, plus tax and shipping, and are available now.

The Universal Citation Guide, written by the American Association of Law Libraries Committee on Citation Formats, also is available from the State Bar. This guide explains the citation system for every court, constitution, and administrative regulation in the United States. Lawyers with multi-jurisdictional practices will find this guide useful. Copies of the Universal Citation Guide are $15, plus tax and shipping.

For more information or to order either publication, please call the State Bar of Wisconsin at (800) 728-7788.
