Wayne A. Arnold, U.W. 1974, recently was named Trustee of the Year
by the Wisconsin Health and Hospital Association. Arnold is chair of the
board of Lakeview Medical Center, Rice Lake, and is private bar liaison
with the State Public Defender.
John Barrett, U.W. 1994, has been elected Milwaukee
County Clerk of Circuit Court. Barrett formerly was legal counsel
in Milwaukee County's Department of Child Support Enforcement.
He also was chair of the Child Support Council for the State
Bar Government Lawyers Division.
Penny G. Gentges, Syracuse 1988, has become a shareholder
in the Milwaukee law firm of Bass & Moglowsky S.C. She practices
consumer bankruptcy and Wisconsin Consumer Act litigation. Claire
Ann Resop, U.W. 1993, has joined the firm as an associate, focusing
on creditor's rights litigation.
Cynthia Obremski Bauer, Marquette 1983, has been promoted
to vice president at Marquette University. She continues to hold
the title of general counsel for the university.
Andrew S. Brignone, U.W. 1974, a founding senior partner
in the Nevada law firm of Schreck Morris, was named Best Labor
Lawyer in Nevada in the October 1998 edition of Nevada Business
Journal.
Christopher J. Brown, U.W. 1986, recently spoke at
the Asian-based Inter-Pacific Bar Association annual meeting
in Auckland, New Zealand, on the role of lawyers instructed by
marine liability insurers following spills by oil tankers in
Asia. He also spoke at the International Bar Association annual
meeting in Vancouver on legal and insurance issues following
a modern Titanic-like passenger vessel casualty. He is a director
of Gard Asia (HK) Ltd., Hong Kong.
Mark Butterfield, U.W. 1986, has been reappointed to
a second three-year term as chief trial judge of the Ho Chunk
Nation Court System.
Nicholas Bykowsky, Oklahoma City University 1977, has
been appointed a senior assistant attorney general for the state
of Florida in its tax section. Based in Tallahassee, he represents
the Florida Department of Revenue in civil tax litigation
on a statewide basis in trials and appeals. He formerly practiced
with Moen, Sheehan & Meyer Ltd., La Crosse.
Robert W. Cannon, Marquette 1954, special counsel in
Saul, Ewing, Weinberg & Green's real estate department
in its Maryland office, recently received the Stuart M. Macht
Award by the Baltimore county executive, the Baltimore County
Department of Economic Development, and the chambers of commerce
and business associations throughout Baltimore County. The award
is presented for outstanding contributions in the area of economic
development. Cannon also received the Maryland State Bar Association's
Pro Bono award in 1997.
Keith B. Daniel Jr., U.W. 1988, has joined Blatt, Hammesfahr
& Eaton, Chicago, Ill., as an associate. He heads the firm's
professional indemnity practice, which includes complex insurance
coverage litigation and employment practices issues.
Michelle L. Danielson, Marquette 1996, has joined the
Milwaukee law firm of Halling & Cayo S.C. as an associate
practicing in civil litigation and worker's compensation.
Maurice D. Jones, Illinois 1988, has rejoined Davis
& Kuelthau S.C. as a shareholder. He joins the corporate
and real estate sections, focusing on mergers and acquisitions,
general business and commercial law matters, and commercial real
estate financing. Prior to rejoining Davis & Kuelthau, Jones
served as in-house legal counsel for Banta Corporation in Menasha.
Paul G. Kent, U.W. 1981, has joined the firm's
Madison office as a shareholder in the environmental section.
He will focus on water and wetlands issues, wastewater permitting,
site remediation, and complex permitting issues for large developments.
He is an adjunct professor/lecturer at the U.W. Law School and
author of Wisconsin's Water Law - A Guide to Water
Rights and Regulations. Nancy J. Delacenserie, U.W. 1983, and Tanya C. O'Neill,
Drake 1998, also have joined the firm's Madison office.
Delacenserie joins the public finance section, serving as bond
counsel to counties, cities, villages, towns, and technical college
districts on matters involving short-term tax-exempt cash flow
borrowings, bond referendum, long-term tax-exempt borrowings,
taxable borrowings, and industrial development bonds. O'Neill
joins the environmental and litigation sections, focusing on
environmental law and a broad range of litigation matters.
Stephen A. Edwards, Michigan 1978, has joined
Kilpatrick Stockton LLP in Atlanta, Ga., focusing in
public and structured finance.
Paul J. Ehlenbach, U.W. 1983, has joined The Boeing
Company as chief counsel, litigation. He is responsible for managing
the litigation staff at the company's corporate headquarters
in Seattle. Ehlenbach previously was a litigation partner in
the Seattle office of Perkins Coie.
Raquel L. Engelke, U.W. 1997, has joined McLaren/Hart
Environmental Engineering Corp. as an assistant environmental
scientist. She will conduct compliance audits, Phase I assessments,
due diligence reviews, and assist clients in establishing environmental
management systems.
Thomas A. Fessler, Pepperdine 1983, has been promoted
to senior counsel for International Paper Co. He formerly was
the vice president and general counsel for Dover Elevators in
Memphis, Tenn., before joining International Paper in 1996.
Ralph Adam Fine, Columbia Law School 1965, has written
The How-To-Win Trial Manual. Published by Juris Publishing Co.
of New York, the book is a step-by-step manual on how to win
jury and bench trials using two- and three-step modules that
work in any case. Gregory P. Joseph, former chair of the ABA
Litigation Section, and Prof. James W. McElhaney, columnist on
trial practice for the ABA Journal, have praised the book.
Foley & Lardner has created a new practice group to provide
a variety of strategic services for clients. John Matthews,
who served as Gov. Thompson's chief of staff since 1994,
will direct the new Public Affairs Practice Group and be based
in the firm's Madison office. U.S. Rep Scott L. Klug, who
recently completed his final term in Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional
District, will be based in the firm's Washington, D.C.,
office. Raymond R. Carey, U.W. 1992, the director of the
Wisconsin Assembly Republican Caucus, will be a member of the
new practice group and will work as a practicing attorney in
the firm's Madison office. Maureen A. McGinnity, U.W. 1982, a litigation partner
in the firm's Milwaukee office, and Daniel A. Kaplan, Marquette
1992, a labor and employment attorney in the firm's Madison
office, were recipients of the firm's Lynford Lardner Community
Service Award. The award recognizes volunteer activity and involvement
in civic affairs.
Fuchs, Snow, O'Connell & DeStefanis S.C. has
moved to 620 N. Mayfair Rd., Milwaukee. The firm represents the
City of Glendale, Village of Fox Point, Village of Germantown,
City of Mequon, and Town of Saukville.
Holly Ann Georgell, U.W. 1993, has joined the recently
opened Chicago office of McGuire, Woods, Battle & Boothe
LLP, a Richmond, Virginia-based firm. She will concentrate her
practice in labor and employment litigation. She previously practiced
with Jenner & Block in Chicago. Georgell also serves as the
secretary for the Chicago Chapter of the Nonresident Lawyers
Division.
Godfrey & Kahn S.C. has added Scott A. Moehrke
and Thomas A. Myers to its Board of Directors, and has
named Christopher B. Noyes as chair of its corporate practice
team. The firm has offices in Appleton, Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee,
and Oshkosh. The firm recently elected as shareholders Carol A. Gehl
(securities) and Daniel B. Geraghty (tax and employee
benefits). Gehl has been a member of the securities team since
1992 and Geraghty with the tax and employee benefits team since
1994.
Jama S. Graves, South Dakota 1997, has joined Marquardt,
Carlson, Koeck, Kirk & Bruni Ltd. of Prairie du Sac and Mazomanie,
as an associate practicing in family and business law, and real

Clayton E. Greenberg, U.W. 1998 cum laude, has become
a member of the State Bar of Texas and joined Locke Purnell Rain
Harrell in Dallas, practicing real estate law.
Mark D. Gundrum, U.W. 1994, has been elected to the
State Assembly for the 84th District. He continues to practice
law at Kasdorf, Lewis & Swietlik S.C. while serving as state
representative.
Susan Van Schaik, Marquette 1996, and Peter W. McCombs,
Marquette 1997, have joined the Milwaukee law firm of Gutglass,
Erickson & Bonville S.C. as associates.
Michael P. Herbrand, Marquette 1994 magna cum laude,
has become a partner in the Grafton firm of Houseman, Feind,
Gallo & Malloy, practicing in municipal law, personal injury,
and litigation.
Carl H. Horst, Marquette 1970, has been appointed a supervising
deputy attorney general in the San Diego office of the
California Attorney General. He formerly served as a Navy judge
advocate on active duty until his transfer to the retired list
in 1986. Since 1987, he has served as an appellate prosecutor
in capital case and major felony appellate litigation.
Henry L. Huser, U.W. 1984, has been elected to the
International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers (2d ed.)
and selected in a survey by the Global Competition Review as
one of the leading international competition lawyers under age
45. He is the resident partner of the Brussels, Belgium, office
of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.
Kenneth A. Iwinski, Marquette 1992 magna cum laude,
has joined Northland Cranberries Inc., Wisconsin Rapids, as assistant
secretary and corporate counsel. He previously was a senior associate
with Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C., Milwaukee.
David Kennedy, U.W. 1982, formerly general counsel
of EarthShell Corp., recently rejoined the Palo Alto, Calif.,
office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP as a partner in the
corporate transactions practice group. He will focus on technology
transactions, including licensing, acquisitions, strategic alliances,
and other transactions involving computer software, semiconductor
chips, biomedical, and other technology. Kennedy started with
Gibson, Dunn in its Los Angeles office in 1982 and went to EarthShell
in 1998 to help take that company public.
The Law Offices of Kepler & Peyton has moved to
634 W. Main St., Ste. 202, Madison. The firm concentrates in
bankruptcy and creditor's rights.
Amy V. Kossoris, U.W. 1998, has joined Hale & Wagner
S.C. (formerly Hale, Skoglind & Wagner S.C.), Milwaukee,
as an associate practicing commercial litigation and personal

John W. Knuteson, Marquette 1975, Bernard J. Powers,
U.W. 1982, and Nancy E. Wheeler, U.W. 1977, have formed
Knuteson, Powers & Wheeler S.C. at 601 Lake Ave., 1st Fl.,
Racine. Knuteson is an attorney/CPA, a Village of Wind Point
trustee, and was appointed by Gov. Thompson to serve as a member
of the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District
(Miller Park) Board. Powers is an attorney/CPA, a member of the
State Bar Section of Taxation's board of directors, and
an adjunct business law instructor for U.W. Parkside. Wheeler
served as a Racine County circuit court judge (1989-96) and as
an assistant to Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley

Lathrop & Clark LLP, a century-old law firm with
offices in Madison, Poynette, Lodi, and Belleville, recently
unveiled a new Web site.
The Web site contains information about the firm's services,

about current legal issues, provides news about the firm, offers
zany tidbits of legal lore, describes job opportunities, delves
into firm history, and provides directions for driving to the
firm's headquarters in Madison.
Amanda (Simonis) Layden, Marquette 1995, has joined
the Milwaukee and Racine law firm of von Briesen, Purtell &
Roper S.C. as an associate in its health care practice group
focusing on business transactional work.
Philip H. Lucht, U.W. 1991, has joined the Stevens
Law Office, Cedarburg, practicing environmental, family, and
real estate law.
Laura J. Macaulay, U.W. 1997, has joined Murphy, Sheneman,
Julian & Rogers, San Francisco, as an associate practicing
in commercial litigation and bankruptcy.
Joseph D. McDevitt, Iowa 1965, a shareholder with Borgelt,

Robert E. Meldman, Marquette 1962, an international
attorney and shareholder in Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris
& Rieselbach S.C., recently spoke at the third annual LAWASIA
Business Law Conference, "Business Law Development Toward
the 21st Century in the Asia and Pacific Region," in Tokyo,
Japan. His topic, "Taxation of Cyberspace," focused
on how the law of taxation could facilitate, hinder, or prevent
the development of the global electronic marketplace. Meldman's
practice focuses on tax controversies and the tax aspects of
general business and international transactions.
The Madison firm of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP
has become part of the Lakeside Group Brownfields Redevelopment
Team (The Lakeside Group). The group is a consortium of engineers,
planners, and attorneys that restores brownfields for public
or private development ventures. Michael Best & Friedrich
will tackle insurance and liability issues, real estate transactions,
zoning concerns, and other legal issues for the group.
Robert B. Moberly, U.W. 1966, has been named Trustee
Research Fellow at the University of Florida College of Law.
He continues to serve as professor of law and director of the
Institute for Dispute Resolution at the University of Florida.
Christine Olsen, San Diego 1986, has relocated Olsen Law Office
to 2503 Grand Ave., Wausau.
David Peterson, U.W. 1991, has rejoined Godfrey &
Kahn S.C. as an associate on the litigation practice team, focusing
on commercial and employment, and products liability and negligence
defense. Prior to returning to Godfrey & Kahn, Peterson was
with Peterson, Johnson & Murray for three years.
Michael T. Fitzpatrick, Thomas M. Cooley 1994,

Beth Rahmig Pless, U.W. 1992 cum laude, has established

Kenneth C. Pletcher, William Mitchell 1998, has joined

Dennis Robertson, U.W. 1970, has been certified as
a civil trial advocate through the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Michael J. Roman, Marquette 1994, has joined the Wausau
law firm of Sandfort, Zalewski & Klinner LLP as an associate
litigation attorney. The firm concentrates its practice in representing
individuals and companies in civil litigation. Roman previously
served a three-year term as a judicial law clerk with the District
I Court of Appeals in Milwaukee for the Hon. Michael T. Sullivan
and the Hon. Patricia Curley.
Paul R.M. Santilli, Marquette 1996, has opened the

The general practice firm emphasizes family law, mediation services,

Matthew L. Schemmel, Boston College 1991, joins Neider
& Boucher S.C., Madison, practicing business, corporate,
and employment law. He also holds an LL.M. in European Law from
the University of London.
Daniel R. Heiden, Marquette 1978, Patricia A. Schober,
Marquette 1986, and Judith M. Bostetter, Marquette 1995,

Sara J. Schwebs, Hamline 1992, has joined The Ramsay

Gordon R. Shea, Marquette 1998, has joined the business
affairs department of Hal Leonard Inc., where he will oversee
copyright licensing agreements and general corporate matters.
The Milwaukee-based corporation is the world's largest publisher
of printed music, with offices worldwide. Shea formerly was an
assistant in the offices of Special Counsel for the State of
Wisconsin for tobacco litigation.
Gilbert L. Southwell III, U.W. 1981, has been named
assistant general counsel of the new Firstar Corp. due to its
merger with Star Bank of Cincinnati, Ohio. Southwell will support
the commercial lending, equipment leasing, international finance,
municipal finance, derivatives, commercial real estate, and special
asset divisions/subsidiaries of the new Firstar Corp.
Gay Ann Spahn, U.W. 1988, has become associated with
Jansson, Shupe, Bridge & Munger Ltd., Racine. Spahn has 11
years of patent experience and formerly was a patent examiner
at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
David P. Spangenberg, U.W. 1990, has become a shareholder
in the Marinette firm of Faller, Pleger, Wilson & Schwaba
S.C. The firm's name has been changed to Wilson, Schwaba
& Spangenber S.C. The firm, one of the oldest in the state,
has been serving clients in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula
of Michigan since 1883.
Denis Stearns, U.W. 1992, has become a founding partner
in Marler Clark, a new Seattle law firm that concentrates in
litigation arising from food-borne illness outbreaks. Stearns
also is a principal in Outbreak Inc., which provides litigation
consultation for the food industry. Stearns' legal practice
continues to emphasize complex commercial litigation.
Susanne M. Stoeckmann, Montana 1996, after completing
a two-year clerkship with the Montana Supreme Court, has joined
the Baraboo office of Quale, Hartmann, Reynolds, Pulsfus &
Groeneweg S.C. as an associate attorney.
Robb Bradford Kahl, U.W. 1997, and Peter J. Richter,
U.W. 1998, have joined the Madison law firm of Stroud, Stroud,

Rebekah R. Syck, Marquette 1998, has joined Boyd, Agnew,

Chad R. Taylor, U.W. 1996, recently was named chief
legal counsel and senior policy advisor for Wisconsin State Assembly
Speaker Scott R. Jensen.
David J. Van Lieshout, St. Louis 1983, has joined the
Appleton law firm of Menn, Nelson, Sharratt, Teetaert & Beisenstein
Ltd., which has established a new Little Chute practice with
Van Lieshout as resident shareholder. The new office is at 234
Grand Ave., Little Chute. Both offices practice personal injury,
employment and business litigation, worker's compensation,
business, tax, estate planning, probate, real estate, and elder
law.
Andrew A. Wilson, Valparaiso 1993, has joined M&I
Trust & Investment Management as vice president of M&I
Trust Fox Valley. He has trust officer responsibilities for M&I
Banks in Brandon, Fairwater, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Pickett, Ripon,
and Rosendale. He formerly was a partner in Basiliere, Wilson
& Goldin LLP, Oshkosh.
The Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers (WATL) recently elected
the following officers for the 1998-99 year: president -
Randall E. Reinhardt, Milwaukee; president-elect -
Kevin Lonergan, Appleton; vice president - M.
Angela Dentice, Brookfield; secretary - Keith R.
Clifford, Madison; and treasurer - Susan Rosenberg,
Milwaukee. Jay A. Urban, Milwaukee, was reelected chair
of the New Lawyers Section, and Pamela R. Pelej, Milwaukee,
was reelected chair of the Paralegal/Legal Assistants Section.
Mark L. Thomsen, Jay A. Urban, and Paul R.
Van Grunsven have been elected to the WATL Board of Directors
for two-year terms. Thomsen is a partner in Cannon & Dunphy
S.C., Brookfield. Urban is an attorney in the law firm of Techmeier
& Van Grunsven S.C., Milwaukee. Van Grunsven is a partner
in the same firm. WATL is the largest voluntary statewide bar
organization in Wisconsin with more than 1,000 members.
