From an economic standpoint, law school was a horrible investment, but I love being a lawyer. When my time comes, in addition to being remembered as a great husband and father, I want to be remembered as a great lawyer and as a lawyer’s lawyer. As YLD President, I want to help struggling young attorneys make a difference in our profession.

If asked, “What needs to be done?” I would say, “A lot but, as for specifics, frankly, I am not sure yet.” What I want is to do what I do best. I want to throw a party ... that is I want to get so many young lawyers involved in the State Bar that they will have to listen to us. You may not like the “party” analogy – my wife did not – but all I really mean is that I want to promote an environment of openness, inclusiveness, cooperation, and mentoring. The YLD meetings, events, committees, and publication opportunities are open to all members. You should get involved and bring your friends.

One of my partners and mentors, Ronald D. Keefe (former Michigan Bar President), once told me, “County bar association positions were once for the youngest lawyers in town so they had something for their resumes.” That’s the way it should be, but young lawyers need to be encouraged or dragged to volunteer. The old dogs are usually happy to turn over the reins.

So as not to ignore the elephant in the room, yes, I am living and working in Michigan and want to be president of the Wisconsin YLD. However, I lived and worked in Green Bay for approximately 6 years. My experience with the YLD has been entirely while living in Michigan. Marquette is only around a 3.5-hour drive from Green Bay, or 2 hours 45 minutes if you are running late to a Packer game. Wisconsin has a large percentage of non-resident lawyers, my wedding photos were taken at Lambeau, and my son is named Clayton after Clay Matthews.

It’s been a pleasure and an honor serving the YLD.
