Technology continues to develop and evolve at breakneck speeds. Keeping up with emerging trends, cybersecurity threats and tools is a job in itself. It is a role that Elevity Director of Solutions, Paul Hager, takes very seriously. Paul has a long track record for successfully identifying trends and predicting the impact they will have on small and medium-sized businesses. This session will review the accuracy of his predictions for 2021: the explosion of edge-distributed cloud products, Internet of Behavior programs and the evolution of the post-COVID workplace. Then Paul will share his new predictions for 2022 – some of which are sure to be wrong! (That’s what makes this fun, right?) Discover what changes 2022 will (likely) bring to the world of technology and what impact they will have on the legal industry.

Opening Plenary: If You Build It They Will Come, and Hopefully Stay

Session Description:

If you’ve understood the “why” behind diversifying your attorneys and staff but struggled with the “how” to accomplish your goal--you’re not alone. Hear from Dr. Sharon Meit Abrahams and a panel of legal professionals whose changes have improved their ability to attract and retain diverse attorneys and staff. Research indicates that one of the most successful and cost-effective ways to improve your bottom line is to prioritize diversity on the team. Studies not only show that employers with greater gender diversity outperform comparable settings, but that employers with ethnic and cultural diversity show even greater profitability. While the research is clear, the legal profession is struggling, and once added, retaining diverse talent is challenging. With the composition of our population dramatically changing, there’s never been a better time to re-evaluate and adjust your plan.

Bridging Ideological Divides: Dialogue That Overcomes Hate, Makes Connections, and Changes Minds

Session Description:

We live in a polarized society. The chasm that began and grew from political division across the country only worsened with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the presidential election, and one hot-button issue after another. Whatever your philosophies or ideologies, finding something in common to discuss and bridging the gap between strong differing opinions has become increasingly challenging. Megan Phelps-Roper, is an author and educator. As an educator on extremism, bullying and sociopolitical disunity, she speaks about the importance of empathy and openness in difficult conversations and across ideological lines. She speaks from experience. In her book, Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church, she reveals how she left her family and her church and shares her transformation from viewing the world through a hateful, intolerant lens to how empathy can overcome hate, and how acceptance can bridge ideology. In this extraordinary talk, Megan will share ways we can learn to successfully engage those with opposing viewpoints and beliefs.

“Megan’s story is encouraging. It shows that we can harness the power of social media for good. That it can be a medium for gentle and patient conversation, that it can help us to find our share in humanity.” — Morgan Freeman, The Story of Us
