Aug. 15, 2012 – Acquiring or selling a privately held business, practicing in the cloud, saving money with technology, avoiding malpractice, and practicing while parenting are just a few reasons to attend the 2012 Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conferenc (WSSFC), Oct. 25 - 27, in Wisconsin Dells.
Attendees can choose from 32 educational sessions in four different tracks: substantive, practice management, technology, and quality of life/ethics, as well as four plenary sessions and a networking luncheon.
Choose From Four Tracks
The Substantive Track, sponsored by Laufenberg, Stombaugh & Jassak S.C., offers sessions on acquiring or selling a privately held business; common mistakes in social security disability claims; choice of entity; ERISA; divorce and bankruptcy; buyer and lender viewpoints on foreclosure; Title 19 planning; and debtor/creditor cases of note.
The Practice Management Track focuses on backing up and recovering data; hiring, managing and firing; ethics and security issues in the cloud; navigating insurance; marketing your firm; practicing solo; and building your business.
The Technology Track, sponsored by Bakke Norman and Ailco Equipment Finance Group, addresses saving money with technology; practicing in the cloud; software tips; Apple vs. Android; investing in staff vs. technology; social media; word processing wars; and time management.
The Quality of Life/Ethics Track focuses on managing client expectations and avoiding malpractice; taking care of yourself; effective and ethical use of staff; flextime; practicing while parenting; and more.
Plenary Sessions
The opening plenary will be a panel discussion on the future of law and will include UW Law School Dean, Margaret Raymond, as well as practitioners and a technology expert who will delve into what is happening to the practice of law and offer their opinions on where things are headed for Wisconsin attorneys.
Ralph Heath, Synergy Leadership Group LLC, La Crosse, will present Innovative Leadership, focusing on embracing risk taking, not being afraid to fail, and moving in bold new directions. Attendees will be able to apply lessons to their practice – lending to personal and financial satisfaction, lessening ethical temptations, and increasing productive communication with clients. David Bilinsky, The Law Society of British Columbia, will present Solo But Not Alone – How to Assemble Your virtual Team. This will be a practical look at operating a virtual office and will dovetail with a pre-conference panel discussion on practicing in a virtual setting.
Stephen M. Gunther will give a closing plenary titled Attorney to Inmate … What Went Wrong. He will take you on a journey from GED diploma to successful attorney to being convicted of fraud.
Other pre-conference and plenary sessions will give insight to conducting legal research and give us a humorous look at the human condition.
Customize Your Conference Experience With Mobile App
Attendees will be able to access the conference schedule, build schedules, add their names to a list of conferees and see who else is there, tweet, and check out vendor information with the 2012 WSSFC mobile app.
The app will be available for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry devices and will be accessible via web browsers on other devices.
The seventh annual WSSFC is hosted by the State Bar of Wisconsin in partnership with founding sponsor, the Milwaukee Bar Association.
Tuition
Tuition is $269 for members and $369 for nonmembers, which includes the networking luncheon. After Sept. 28, prices increase by $50. The networking luncheon costs $20 for Ultimate Pass holders and guests. Members and their staff can register now.
This conference will be submitted for CLE and EPR credits and is included in the cost of the Ultimate Pass.
