Awards and Recognition

The State Bar of Wisconsin recognizes the contributions of Wisconsin judges, attorneys, and legal professionals to the practice of law and the administration of justice. We celebrate and congratulate the award winners for their outstanding service, and all volunteers who so willingly give time and advice to help make the legal system more accessible to the people of Wisconsin by providing pro bono legal services, public service and law-related education. Awards given in 2024 are for contributions to the profession which took place in 2023.

Judge of the Year - The Judge of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding circuit court trial judge who is an example of a fair and impartial jurist.	Not awarded 2024
Lifetime Jurist - The Lifetime Jurist Achievement Award recognizes a jurist who has served more than one (1) full term as a circuit court judge, who is an example of a fair and impartial jurist, has demonstrated high ideals and personal character, and has demonstrated outstanding, long-term judicial service during his or her years as a sitting judge. Charles Dunn Wisconsin Lawyer Author Award - Each year the Communications Committee, which serves as the Wisconsin Lawyer Editorial Board, recognizes writing excellence in the publication. The Wisconsin Lawyer author award was named in honor of Wisconsin’s first Supreme Court chief justice.	Atty. Jesse B. Blocher
Hotline Attorney of the Year - The Hotline Attorney of the Year award is presented to an attorney whose commitment to the service is represented by long term and highly dedicated participation.	Not awarded 2024
Pro Bono Attorney of the Year and Pro Bono Organization of the Year - The Legal Assistance Committee Pro Bono Awards are given to an individual and organization which have demonstrated dedication to the development and delivery of legal services to the poor or contributed significantly toward developing innovative ways to deliver volunteer legal services. Diversity & Inclusion Trailblazer Award - The Diversity & Inclusion Award celebrates an individual who contributes to and enhances diversity and inclusion within the Wisconsin legal profession.	Atty. Iris Christenson
Dan Tuchscherer Outstanding Public Interest Law Attorney - The Outstanding Public Interest Law Attorney Award is presented to an attorney who embodies the elements of the award: A lifetime commitment to working in the public interest, a hard worker with a commitment to volunteerism beyond employment responsibilities, a selfless commitment to helping others, and working to help the community at large, either one client at a time or more "globally." Ryan Klesh Public Interest Legal Worker Award - Recognizes an individual who captures the essence of Ryan’s selflessness, work ethic, and humor in working to seek justice.	Liam Coughlan (posthhumously)
Outstanding Public Interest Law Students - This award is presented to law students who have demonstrated commitment to working in the public interest; public interest involvement before and during law school; exceptional volunteer work or activism in their community, the community at large, or the law school community; and a commitment to helping others. Wisconsin Law Foundation Gordon Sinykin Award of Excellence - The Gordon Sinykin Award of Excellence recognizes a lawyer, law firm, or group of lawyers for their work in an individual law-related education or public service project in the preceding year.	Atty. Cassel Villarreal
Government Lawyers Division Grant F. Langley Service Award - The Government Lawyers Division’s inaugural Grant F. Langley Service Award is presented to an attorney who is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin Government Lawyers Division with at least 5 years of service as a government lawyer. The recipient has accomplishments in the legal profession, provides services not only to the government and citizens, but also to other government attorneys, and is involved in activities that increase the public’s respect for government lawyers while promoting government legal work as a rewarding career choice. Nonresident Lawyers Division Founders Award - Recognizes a nonresident member who has brought positive change to the division and has actively participated in State Bar activities for many years.	Atty. Viet-Hanh Winchell
Senior Lawyers Division Leonard Loeb Award - The award recognizes an exceptional senior lawyer who has made significant contributions to the legal community, has shown respect for the legal system, and has demonstrated a love for the law and what it seeks to accomplish.	Atty. Mary Lynne Donohue
Young Lawyers Division Outstanding Young Lawyer Award - This award pays tribute to a young lawyer who has made an impact in their practice area, in service to the State Bar of Wisconsin, and in service to the community.	Atty. Abrielle Newman
Young Lawyers Division Mentoring Award - The award is designed to pay tribute to a Wisconsin attorney who has made an exceptional contribution to the life and career of a young attorney. The nominee must have six or more years of practice experience, be a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, and have been in good standing with the State of Wisconsin for more than 12 months.	Atty. Wisconsin Legal Innovators - Through "That's a Fine Idea! Legal Innovation Wisconsin," the State Bar of Wisconsin welcomes nominations from the legal profession and public that help tell the story of legal innovation in Wisconsin. Know a risk taker, a visionary in the legal profession who found a creative way to solve a client or community problem, drove internal operating efficiencies, or transformed office culture to ensure it thrives tomorrow?
