April 15, 2015 – Get involved in your bar local or specialty bar association and receive free CLE and EPR training at the Wisconsin Bar Leaders Conference on May 8 at the State Bar Center in Madison.
Anyone active in their local or specialty bar is welcome to attend the conference, as is anyone interested in getting involved in their bar associations’ leadership.
“The conference provides a great opportunity for local and specialty bars to grow their local level leadership by identifying their future leaders and encouraging them to attend this free conference,” said Margaret Ahne Herlitzka, chair of the State Bar’s Local Bar Relations Committee.
You don’t have to be a current bar leader to attend: anyone involved or interested in becoming involved in leading their local bar association is invited to register and attend the conference at no cost. With this conference, the State Bar is providing programs, activities, and information for lawyers to take back to their local and specialty bar associations.
“This year's conference will send attendees home with multiple sessions that can be re-presented to their members. The presentation materials are all going back to local bars. I look forward to seeing many of the state's leaders at the conference,” said Johanna Kirk of Kirk Law Office LLC in Superior and chair of the conference’s planning committee. Kirk is also past president of the Douglas County Bar Association.

What Past Attendees Say about the Bar Leaders Conference
“The Conference is a valuable resource for anyone in a leadership position. The opportunity to sit down with other leaders from bar associations across Wisconsin and brainstorm about issues and problems is unique to this conference.”
– Jacob R. Reis of Habush Habush & Rottier of Appleton, who has attended the conference as president of the Outagamie County Bar Association and as an executive member of the Brown County Bar Association.
“The conference is an opportunity to brainstorm solutions to challenges facing bar associations across the state, including exploring ways in which the State Bar can assist local bars in achieving their goals. For our board, traveling to the conference serves as a mini-retreat, allowing us to get to know each other and provide extended time away from our busy practices to set our agenda for the coming year. We inevitably return from the conference with at least one new idea to implement in the coming year.”
– Bridget Finke of Bakke Norman S.C. in Menomonie. Finke is president of the St. Croix Valley Bar Association.
“I have always make time to attend this conference as the exchange of ideas with other bar leaders has been invaluable. Whether the challenge is getting more members involved in a local or specialty bar or keeping current members engaged, the conference offers great ideas and solutions that can be easily implemented.”
– Margaret Ahne Herlitzka of Hale, Skemp, Hanson, Skemp & Sleik in La Crosse. Herlitzka attended the conference as a La Crosse County bar leader and will attend this year as chair of the Local Bar Relations Committee.
At the conference, the featured keynote speaker is Judge Barbara B. Crabb of the U.S. District Court Western District in Madison. Nominated by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, Judge Crabb brings her unique and authoritative viewpoint on the most effective strategies she’s seen employed by attorneys in her 16 years with the federal judiciary.
Three CLE Tracks
The conference offers three CLE programming tracks, covering such topics as rights and obligations when using social media, how bar associations can help lawyers transitioning out of law, ethics and limited-scope representation, the latest practice management tips, substance abuse and ethical violations, and how different generations view lawyers.
Take CLE Training Home
The conference’s new "Take Away Training" allows attendees to take six different CLE programs back to their bar associations to present to their members. The programs include everything in one package – PowerPoint presentations, course materials, talking points, and more.
Door Prizes and More
Lunch is included for attendees. And those who stay for the conference wrap-up have a chance to win door prizes, including a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad, compliments of West Bend Mutual Insurance. And one lucky participant will go home with a complimentary pass to the 2015 Annual Meeting & Conference!
