March 13, 2017 – Brookfield Academy has claimed its first state mock trial title after defeating River Falls High School in the final round of the annual two-day state competition. Brookfield will represent Wisconsin at the 2017 National Mock Trial Championship, May 11-13, in Hartford, Connecticut.
Justice Daniel Kelly served as presiding judge over the final round, which was held Sunday, March 12, in the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
“Both teams put on an impressive performance,” said State Bar of Wisconsin Mock Trial Chair Emily Lonergan. “All of the students proved to the judges and audience that they have the composure and skills needed to handle a real court case.”

Brookfield Academy and River Falls – who competed against each other in the finals for the first time – were the top two teams to make it out of the semifinals, which took place Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Dane County Courthouse in Madison. This year the semi-finals were expanded to include the first and second place regional team winners. In total, 24 teams from across the state competed in the daylong event consisting of four intense rounds of competition.
“We are thrilled that we were able to expand the tournament this year, and allow so many more students to have the semi-finals experience” Lonergan said. “The judges were impressed with the caliber of the teams, including many of the runner-up teams who would not have been participating had we not expanded the tournament.”
