Aug. 2, 2023 – No matter where you are in your career path, there is always more to learn.
Last year, Brittani Miller, a real estate associate with Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, joined the State Bar of Wisconsin
G. Lane Ware Leadership Academy.
Miller signed up just a few months after completing her J.D. from U.W. Law School in May 2021.
The Leadership Academy is a comprehensive training program created by the State Bar’s Leadership Development Committee that teaches practical leadership skills for Wisconsin lawyers.
Participating in the Academy “showed me that there are leadership opportunities, or opportunities to grow into leadership roles, at many different points of a person’s career,” Miller said.
The Academy takes place over two-day sessions in November, February, and April. It teaches skills for time management, public speaking, conflict resolutions, active listening, effective written and oral communication, networking, and more.
“The Academy gave me the tools to identify those opportunities and prepare myself for when the right ones appear,” she said.
The practical tip she keeps top of mind: “Start a speech or presentation with a story to grab the audience’s attention.”
She encourages lawyers to apply. “No matter where you find yourself in your career, it is always helpful to learn or get a refresher on what leadership is or could be,” Miller said.

The next session begins in November, 2023. Topics include: effective written and verbal communication, time management, public speaking, conflict resolution, active listening, community leadership, and networking. The program will be submitted for CLE credit.
When: Two-day sessions on Nov. 3-4, 2023; Jan. 19-20, 2024; and April 19-20, 2024. Attendance at all sessions is required.
