Young Lawyer of the Year: Abrielle Newman

Milwaukee attorney Abrielle Newman is recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Young Lawyer award. Find out why she is driven to help her home community of Milwaukee thrive.

June 5, 2024 – Milwaukee attorney Abrielle Newman loves Milwaukee and wants to do what she can to see it thrive.

Newman is the 2024 Outstanding Young Lawyer from the State Bar of Wisconsin Young Lawyers Division. The award is given to young lawyers who make an impact in their practice areas and in service to the State Bar and to their community.

Newman, U.W. 2021, is dedicated to serving her clients and the community and is a passionate advocate who is committed to learning and growing. She is the lead staff attorney for Legal Action’s nationally recognized Eviction Defense Project.

She manages the pro bono project, which enlists private attorneys to represent tenants at their eviction hearings. She supervises both attorney and student volunteers, ensuring that all participants in the project understand the relevant law and how eviction proceedings work in Wisconsin so they can best serve the project’s clients. Newman also has a caseload of her own, where she defends clients in eviction actions.

Receiving the award, she said, is “a tremendous honor. … What I do means a lot to me. I put a lot into it, and it’s an honor to be recognized,” she said.

What drives her is her desire to help not just her community, but her colleagues. “I want them to be able to learn and to help our clients have dignified services.”

It is important, she says, for lawyers to be active within their community. “Having that consciousness of your community and feeling empowered and driven to do something good can really inspire you to do that in your work every single day.”
