Plenary on Discovery Issues Kicks Off Solo and Small Firm Conference

Aug. 21, 2024 – For solo and small-firm attorneys litigating against big firms, discovery is often a David vs. Goliath scenario.

“They can throw so many resources at this, whereas we in small firms are trying to get our clients through the pre-trial process so we can get them to trial or settlement and get justice,” said Kevin Palmersheim of Palmersheim Dettman, S.C.

Palmersheim and his law partner Cathleen Dettman will give the opening plenary, “Litigation ABCs: D is for Discovery and Don’t Distress,” at the State Bar’s 2024 Wisconsin Solo and Small Firm Conference (WSSFC), Oct. 17-19, at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The discovery challenge faced by solos and small firms is even more acute in today’s digital age, Palmersheim said.

“Now, even in what I wouldn’t consider huge cases, we’ll have tens of thousands of electronic documents, sometimes hundreds of thousands,” Palmersheim said. “There’s just not a human way you can keep track of that.”

Luckily, there’s affordable technology available to help level the playing field.
