Sept. 4, 2024 – The State Bar of Wisconsin is committed to continuously improving the security of members’ online profiles. To better protect privacy and give members more control over personal information, the State Bar is introducing enhanced security protocols. These updates are designed to significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized third-party access to personal information and email harvesting by spammers.

These measures are intended to better safeguard members’ personal contact information but also to help reduce the risks of violence or threats of violence against members, including judges. The changes will take effect this evening (Sept. 4, 2024).

Previously, member work address, website, phone number, and email address were publicly available by default through WisBar’s Lawyer Directory. Members could opt out of displaying some or all of their personal contact information.

Now, by default, work address, website, phone number, and email address will not be publicly available. Members can opt in to make that information available if they choose.

Members have the flexibility to make any or all of these details visible to the general public, restrict them to registered (authenticated) users only, or suppress them entirely.

These updates empower you to manage your online presence on WisBar’s Lawyer Directory with greater security and peace of mind.

To update your settings starting Sept. 5, 2024, simply log in, go to your profile and adjust your “Directory-Displayed” preferences accordingly.

How Will this Change my Current Settings?

For members whose information was publicly available previously, the State Bar will default your profile display setting to registered (authenticated) users, which includes other State Bar members and logged-in customers.

For members who previously restricted access to personal information on Lawyer Directory, those settings will not change and will continue to be hidden from display.

Your privacy and safety are our top priorities. We encourage you to review and update your profile settings to ensure your information is shared according to your preferences.
