Feb. 15, 2012 – The Director of State Courts Office through its Court Interpreter Program’s (CIP) will offer interpreter training in Appleton on March 9 and 10, Milwaukee on May 19 and 20, Wausau on Aug. 25 and 26, and Madison on Oct. 20 and 21.
Attendance at the two-day orientation training is a mandatory first step towards obtaining certification as a court interpreter. This 14-hour introductory workshop covers the fundamentals of interpretation and is open to all spoken and sign languages. It gives participants an overview of the needs and expectations of the court, with emphasis on ethical conduct, legal terminology, court procedure, and basic legal interpreting skills. The training also includes small group practice exercises to develop interpreter skills. Faculty consists of judges, court commissioners, attorneys, and certified or qualified court interpreters.
Upon meeting training, testing and other program requirements, interpreters’ names and contact information are added to a roster maintained by the Director of State Courts. The roster includes more than 25 spoken languages and American Sign Language and is used by state and municipal courts, attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations and individuals seeking interpreters with legal training.
