Aug. 17, 2011 – Focus on the perceptions and realities of diversity at the State Bar of Wisconsin’s 2011 Diversity Counsel Program on Sept. 30 in Milwaukee, 8 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. Today’s Diversity: Perception and Reality is presented in collaboration with the Association of Corporate Counsel, Wisconsin Chapter.
Morning sessions
Wisconsin’s New Voter ID Law – What Does it Mean for Wisconsin Voters and Can it Survive Constitutional Challenges?, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Listen to a panel discus the history of the move towards voter identification, initial implementation, public outreach, as well as access issues and pragmatic approaches on Election Day. Panelists analyze potential constitutional issues in the context of past and present legal challenges to similar statues in other states. Panelists include Kevin Kennedy, director & general counsel, Wisconsin Government Accountability Board; Roy Korte, Wisconsin Department of Justice; Prof. Edward Fallone, Marquette University Law School; and Adam Stephens, Milwaukee City Attorney's Office. The moderator is attorney Milele Coggs, M.A. Coggs & Associates LLC.
When Public Policy Meets Reality, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Former Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Secretary Manuel “Manny” Perez and EEOC attorney-mediator Robert Tomlinson discuss the challenges inherent in developing diversity policies and provide guidance on implementing workplace diversity programs.
Different Paths to Diversity, 10:45 - 11:45 a.m. Jason Brown, executive director and general counsel for the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms, and Gail Kim, program director and director of operations, Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms, discuss the opportunities and challenges of encouraging diversity. Brown and Gupta review and compare similarities and differences in the methods employed by their organizations to achieve the same goal – according lawyers of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to provide quality legal services to major clients.
Keynote speaker
Sean Carter
Following a networking luncheon, nationally recognized humorist Sean Carter speaks to bias as it relates to race, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and class in his presentation, Fail Better: Continuing Efforts to Eliminate Bias. Using witty one-liners and hilarious anecdotes, Carter demonstrates that while some level of bias is inevitable, it can be overcome as we continually strive for greater equality in our workplaces, schools, and communities.
Afternoon session
Expand Your Clients – Increase Your Leverage, 1:45 - 2:45 p.m. Michael Moore, Moore’s Law, presents ideas to grow your practice and create economic value for your firm. Given the unique marketing and selling challenges that diverse attorneys face, it is imperative they have superior client development skills. Often they can leverage their diversity in many unique opportunities and create a personal competitive advantage. This program covers networking, social media, how to ask for business, and follow-through techniques. It also addresses specific, applicable ethical boundaries under the Code of Professional Conduct.
Registration and cost
Tuition for this 8 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. program is $35 for members, $25 for Ultimate Pass Holders, $15 for law students, and $50 for nonmembers. The State Bar will submit the program for CLE credit. Register online or call (800) 728-7788.
