OLR district investigative committees seek lawyer and public
applicants
October 9, 2002
The Wisconsin Supreme Court's Appointment Selection Committee
recently met to make nominations to the district investigative
committees. "Unfortunately, there were not enough applicants to complete
the nominations in all of the districts," says Michelle Behnke,
Appointment Selection Committee chair. "In many cases we need both
lawyer and public applicants."
Applicants are urgently needed in District 3 which
includes Winnebago, Fond Du Lac, and Green Lake Counties;
District 4 which includes Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc,
Calumet, and Sheboygan counties; District 5, which
includes Crawford, LaCrosse, Richland, Vernon, Monroe, Trempealeau,
Jackson, Clark, Buffalo, and Pepin counties; District 7
which includes Wood, Portage, Waupaca, Waushara, Adams, Juneau,
Marquette, Sauk, and Columbia Counties; District 10
which includes Marinette, Menomonee, Oconto, Outagamie, and Shawano
Counties; District 11 which includes Douglas, Bay
Field, Iron, Ashland, Sawyer, Washburn, Burnette, Price, Polk, Barron,
Rusk, Taylor, and Chippewa Counties; and District 16
which includes Forest, Florence, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Oneida,
and Vilas Counties.
The new terms for the District Committees begin January 1. "It is
important that all committees be fully staffed so that they can handle
the work in a timely manner," says Behnke.
According to Behnke, the selection committee must forward to the
supreme court two names for every vacancy. To the extent possible,
one-third of the members should be nonlawyers. Lawyers must have at
least five years of practice experience and no record of public
discipline.
Those interested should send a resumes to the Clerk of the Supreme
Court, P.O. Box 1688, Madison, WI 53701 as soon as possible. The next
Appointment Selection Committee meeting will be held in mid-November.
Attorney applicants should have five or more years of practice
experience. Public members should have business or other professional
experience. District committees investigate grievances filed against
attorneys. Grievances are initially screened and investigated by OLR
staff members.
The Appointment Selection Committee makes nominations to the supreme
court for a number of boards, committees, and commissions. For further
