Deadlines near for State Bar officer, governor, and division officer
candidates
Oct. 4, 1999
Would you like to become more involved in the State Bar? Consider
serving your fellow attorneys and helping shape the State Bar as an
officer or governor.
State Bar members will elect the next State Bar president-elect,
secretary, and district governors in February, but candidacy deadlines
are approaching quickly.
Officer and Board of Governors elections
A five-person nominating committee chooses two or more candidates for
each office. Those wishing to be considered for president-elect or
secretary should contact any member of this year's nominating committee
- Gary Bakke, Susan Steingass, Dan Hildebrand, Nathan Fishbach, or
Christy Brown - by the end of October.
Candidates for State Bar offices also may be nominated by petition.
Petitions must be signed by 100 active Bar members and filed at the
State Bar by Dec. 1. Those elected take office July 1, 2000.
Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 16 elect governors in 2000.
District 2 elects six governors; District 9, three governors; all other
districts elect one governor each. The winning candidates serve two-year
terms beginning July 1, 2000. (See page 583 of the 1999 Wisconsin
Lawyer Directory for a district map.)
Bar members interested in running for the Board of Governors must
submit a petition, signed by 10 active Bar members in the candidate's
district, by Jan. 3, 2000. However, candidates are urged to return
petitions by Dec. 10 so that their names appear in the January election
issue of the State Bar newsletter. Ballots for officer and governor
elections are mailed no later than Feb. 4, 2000. Only those completed
ballots returned by Feb. 18 are accepted.
To receive a petition, contact Jan
Marks at the State Bar at (608) 250-6106; (800) 444-9404, ext.
6106.
