    March 22, 2013 – Twenty-six young lawyers who were nominated by legal professionals statewide are attending the first State Bar Leadership Development Summit in Madison today.

    "The Leadership Summit brings together newer lawyers with current bar leaders to give the newer lawyers the tools they need to become tomorrow's bar leaders," said Jill Kastner, Leadership Development Summit chair.

    State Bar President Kevin Klein opened the morning session. "Quality leadership over an extended period of time is critical to the performance of any organization,” Klein said. “I have long recognized the Bar's need for leadership development, with a focus on continuity. The Leadership Summit brings together a diverse group of potential future leaders and experienced presenters, from all around Wisconsin. Participants, and in turn their local and specialty bars, will benefit from the discussions and long term, the State Bar will benefit."

    President-elect Patrick Fiedler is scheduled to discuss State Bar involvement and the practical steps to get involved. Other presenters will meet with attendees during informal 15-minute sessions:

    • Kathy Chung and Micabil Diaz Martinez will discuss the role of a leader;

    • Yer Vang and John Walsh will discuss why and when to consider a leadership role;

    • Nilesh Patel and Jill Kastner will speak about the path to leadership; and

    • Sherry Coley and Kevin Klein will speak about balancing practice and volunteer involvement.

    Immediately following the Leadership Summit, more than 125 young lawyers will convene for the Fourth Annual Young Lawyers Leadership Conference. The afternoon program focuses on fostering the knowledge, skills, and motivation new lawyers need to become active members in the State Bar, local bar associations, and other public service organizations.

    Former Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, along with the other presenters, encourage conference and summit participants to invest in their careers by taking on leadership roles and actively engaging in volunteerism.
