June 25, 2013 – A new legislative proposal introduced in the Capitol would require prospective real estate brokers to show that they have had at least two years of real estate sales experience under the direct supervision of a licensed broker before they can be licensed as brokers themselves.
Senate Bill 208, sponsored by Sen. Richard Gudex (R-Fond du Lac) and Rep. Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna), indicated that Wisconsin is the only state that doesn’t require experience as a real estate broker for licensing.
The proposal would exempt attorneys licensed to practice law in Wisconsin from the requirement, as long as the attorney can demonstrate relevant real estate experience to the Real Estate Examining Board. The current bill draft does not define what relevant real estate experience is under the statute.
