State Bar welcomes 122 new lawyers in four ceremonies at Capitol

On Oct. 6, 122 lawyers who passed the bar exam were admitted to practice in Wisconsin. The lawyers were welcomed by six Wisconsin Supreme Court justices, State Bar Past President Thomas Basting, Board of Bar Examiner (BBE) Director John Kosobucki, and BBE Chair James Morrison. Justice Ann Walsh Bradley presided over the four ceremonies in the Supreme Court Hearing room.

    Fourth Generation

Fourth generation joins the legal profession: (From left) Justices David Prosser, Patrick Crooks, Patience Roggensack, and Anne Walsh Bradley (far right) congratulate Court of Appeals Judge Kitty Brennan and her new lawyer son, Patrick J. Murphy. Murphy is the fourth generation to enter the legal profession, but the first to take the bar exam. Murphy attended the University of Minnesota. His dad, Joe, and mother attended the University of Wisconsin. His grandfather Joseph K. Brennan and great grandfather Martin J. Brennan attended Marquette.

Morrison told the new lawyers, “A law license is more than a license to practice, it is a license to learn. If you stop learning you should stop practicing. Always tell the truth, and seek advice from others in the profession. If you have a question ask – ask a judge, ask another lawyer – but ask.”

The swearing in ceremonies were held at the State Capitol in the Supreme Court Hearing room. Following the ceremonies the State Bar hosted a reception at Monona Terrace. During the reception, each new member signed the Supreme Court Roll, which has been signed by every Wisconsin attorney since the state was a territory.

One hundred ninety-four lawyers passed the exam representing a 90 percent pass rate. This brings State Bar membership to 23,225.
