New Hires, Promotions, Partners

Nicholas S. Barnhorst, Marquette 2005, has joined The Trademark Group, La Jolla, Calif., and focuses on domestic and international trademark clearance, prosecution, and portfolio management.

Vicki Ridgway Barton, Brandeis 1996, has joined Gagliardi Law LLP, Paddock Lake, as an associate and focuses on bankruptcy, probate, corporate, and plaintiffs’ personal injury cases.

Timothy Caprez, Loyola-Chicago 2003, has joined O’Neil, Cannon, Hollman, DeJong S.C., Milwaukee, and focuses on complex health-care and labor and employment issues.

Rebecca R. DeMarb, U.W. 1997, has joined Kepler & Peyton, Madison, as of counsel. The firm has opened an office in Evansville.

Scott Andrew Farrow, Marquette 1988, has become chief of the National Bankruptcy Training Institute at the U.S. Department of Justice National Advocacy Center, Columbia, S.C. He previously was with the U.S. Trustee Program’s Las Vegas field office.

Emily A. Fey, Drake 2004, has been promoted to senior associate at Swendson/Menting Law Ltd., Oconomowoc, and continues to concentrate in estate planning, asset protection, and probate and trust administration.

Andrew J. Fleming, Marquette 2007, has been promoted to managing director at McKinley Reserve, Milwaukee, a private investment firm.

Mark F. Foley, Michigan 1981 cum laude, has joined the Milwaukee office of von Briesen & Roper s.c. as a shareholder and focuses on general civil litigation; bankruptcy, reorganizations, and workouts; global data privacy, security, and information management; and product liability defense. He previously was with Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee.

Sandra J. Giernoth, Marquette 2009 cum laude, has joined Kim & LaVoy S.C., Brookfield, as an associate and focuses on criminal defense and traffic matters.

Peter F. Hittner, Marquette 1971, has joined Ruffi Law Offices S.C., Wausau, and focuses on probate and estate administration, estate planning, business law, and real estate transactions. He previously was with Tlusty, Hittner, Kennedy & Freeburg S.C., Schofield.

Katharine Koepsell, U.W. 2009, has joined Quincey, Becker, Schuessler & Chase S.C., Beaver Dam and Mayville, as an associate.

Chad W. Koplien, Marquette 1997, has been awarded a direct commission in the Wisconsin Army National Guard as a judge advocate general corps officer and serves with the 64th Troop Command. He also is a business lawyer and commercial litigator with Lee, Kilkelly, Paulson & Younger, Madison.

Timothy M. Hansen, Iowa 2002 with distinction, and Aaron H. Kastens, U.W. 2002 cum laude, have been elected partners at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP. Hansen and Kastens are both with the litigation practice group in the Milwaukee office. Katrina G. Hull, Kansas 2005, has joined the firm as a member of the intellectual property practice group. She previously worked with Legal Action of Wisconsin Inc.

Bill Milne, U.W. 2001, has joined Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci S.C., Eau Claire, and is a member of the business, real estate, and estate planning section.

Bruce A. Olson, Marquette 1981, has joined ONLAW Trial Technologies, a trial technology, ediscovery, and computer-forensic-consulting firm, as president. He previously was with Davis & Kuelthau S.C.

		Brian G. Carroll, Marquette 1984, and John M. Murphy, Chicago 2001, have joined Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., Milwaukee, as shareholders. Carroll is with the business law and health-care practices and previously practiced in Waukesha County. Murphy is with the real estate practice and previously practiced with Sidley Austin LLP, Chicago.

Anthony Steffek, Marquette 2006, has joined Hermes Law Ltd., Green Bay, and focuses on corporate and complex litigation. He previously was with Denissen, Kranzush, Mahoney & Ewald S.C., Green Bay.

Lew Wasserman, Drake 1979, has joined Birdsall Law Offices S.C., Milwaukee, as of counsel and focuses on criminal defense.

Jeremy Welch, U.W. 2001, has been promoted to shareholder at Ruder Ware LLSC, Wausau, and continues to concentrate on business and commercial law.

Three attorneys have been promoted to shareholder at Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. Ted J. Barthel, DePaul 2000, focuses on intellectual property law in the Milwaukee office. Francis H. LoCoco, U.W. 1986 cum laude, focuses on products liability and other personal injury defense in the Milwaukee office. Sverre D. Roang, U.W. 1994 cum laude, focuses on business law in the Madison office.

Cletus R. Willems III, Georgetown 2008, has joined the office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Executive Office of the President, Washington, D.C., as an assistant general counsel. He previously was with the budget committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Appointments, Elections

Valerie Bailey-Rihn, U.W. 1991 magna cum laude, has been appointed president-elect of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. She concentrates in commercial and business litigation, ERISA litigation, consumer litigation, and creditors’ rights and bankruptcy at the Madison office of Quarles & Brady LLP.

James R. Cole, U.W. 1969, has been elected to the State Bar Alternative Dispute Resolution Section board. He is a partner with the Madison office of Quarles & Brady LLP and focuses on intellectual property litigation, construction mediation and arbitration, and commercial transactions litigation.

Francis (Fran) W. Deisinger, U.W. 1982 with honors, has been elected president of the Milwaukee Bar Association. He is general counsel and a shareholder in the litigation practice at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., Milwaukee.

Nicole Druckrey, Minnesota 2003 cum laude, has been elected president of the board of Ebenezer Childcare Centers Inc., Milwaukee. She practices commercial litigation with the Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP.

The Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association has elected the following officers: president – Cristina Hernandez-Malaby; president-elect – G. Michael Halfenger; vice president – Matthew G. O’Neill; secretary – Anthony S. Baish; and treasurer – William H. Levit Jr., all of Milwaukee.

Daniel P. Gustafson, U.W. 1996, has been elected to the State Bar Energy & Telecommunications Section board. He is a partner with Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Madison, and focuses on energy, utility, and environmental law.

Timothy A. Nettesheim, Univ. of the Pacific-McGeorge 1981, has been elected to the Waukesha County Action Network board. He is a member of the business law, tax, and trusts and estates practices at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. and is managing shareholder of the firm’s Waukesha office.

Anthony Cotton, Marquette 2005, has been elected president of 180º Juvenile Diversion, and Peter Wolff, Marquette 2002, has been elected vice president of the program, which works with young offenders to help them change their behavior and avoid criminal convictions. Cotton is with Kuchler & Cotton Law Offices, Waukesha. Wolff is with Wolff & Sonderhouse LLP, Waukesha.

The Racine County Bar Association has elected the following officers: president – Kristin Cafferty; president-elect – Christy M. Hall; secretary – Carrie R. Michelson; and treasurer – Bernard J. Powers, all of Racine.

			Jennifer R. D’Amato, U.W. 1989 with honors, has been elected to the board of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. She is a shareholder in the trusts and estates practice and a member of the tax-exempt organizations team. Mark A. Carneli, Marquette 1985, and Jerome M. Janzer, Marquette 1982, have been reelected to the board. Carneli is a shareholder in the litigation practice and cochairs the white collar litigation and corporate compliance team. Janzer is chair, president, and CEO of the firm, cochair of the real estate practice, and a member of the business law practice.

Bill Spangler, Hamline 2003 cum laude, has been elected to the State Bar Young Lawyers Division board. He focuses on business formation and acquisition, commercial and residential real estate, and estate planning at Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci S.C., Eau Claire.

Christopher E. Ware, Michigan 1995, has been elected to the Alverno College Board of Trustees. He is cochair of the white collar litigation and corporate compliance group and a member of the product distribution and franchise team at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., Milwaukee.

Gregory M. Wesley, U.W. 1997, has been elected to the United Way of Greater Milwaukee board. He is a partner and cochair of the employment law group at Gonzalez, Saggio & Harlan LLP, Milwaukee.

The Western District of Wisconsin Bar Association has elected the following officers: president – Sarah A. Zylstra; vice president/president-elect – Andrew J. Clarkowski; treasurer – Lynn M. Stathas; and secretary – Richard Briles Moriarty, all of Madison.

Awards, Degrees, Honors

Absolute Technology Law Group LLC, a Milwaukee-based intellectual property law firm, received the State of Wisconsin Governor’s Award for Federal Contractor of the Year at a ceremony in June in Brookfield.

Dean R. Dietrich, Marquette 1977, was recognized at the 2009 Volunteer Lawyers Project Awards Reception for his pro bono contributions to successful efforts to obtain a Wisconsin Supreme Court rule concerning interest on lawyers’ trust accounts. He is with Ruder Ware LLSC, Wausau.

Richard J. Rakita, Marquette 1970, and his wife received an award from the Jewish National Fund and the Jewish Home and Care Center in honor of their years of service and leadership on behalf of the home. He is head of the real estate practice group at Weiss Berzowski Brady LLP, Milwaukee and Delafield.

Barbara Zabawa, U.W. 2001, has received Fellow status with the American College of Healthcare Executives and also has been elected chair of the State Bar Health Law Section. She practices health law and intellectual property and business law litigation with the Madison office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C.
