Judge William Eich,
U.W. 1963, retires from the court Oct. 1 after 35 years of service,
26 as a judge. Eich served as chief justice of the Wisconsin Court
of Appeals from 1989-98, longer than any other chief judge. |
Judge Edwin Dahlberg, U.W. 1949, has retired from the
bench after 41 years of service in Rock County.
Judge Thomas H. Barland, U.W. 1956, received the award of judicial
excellence presented by the ABA judicial division National Conference
of State Trial Judges. He was recognized for his "outstanding performance
and achievement, exemplary conduct, excellence of character, and extraordinary
service to the bench, bar, and community."
Scott Hassett, Rutgers 1980, a shareholder at Lawton
& Cates S.C., Madison, has been named chair of the board
of directors of the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin.
James W. McNeilly Jr., U.W. 1981, has become a member
of the Commercial Law League of America, an organization of bankruptcy
and commercial law professionals.
In conjunction with the State Bar Annual Convention, the following
awards were presented at the seventh annual Pro Bono Publico
Awards and Equal Justice Coalition Reception hosted by Legal
Action of Wisconsin and its Volunteer Lawyers Project, Legal
Services of Northeastern Wisconsin, western Wisconsin Legal Services,
Wisconsin Judicare, and the Equal Justice Coalition: Mary
Lou Massignani Community Activist Award - Liz Marquardt,
Task Force on Family Violence; Dan Tuchscherer Legal Services
Staff Advocate Award - Kevin Magee, Lewis and
Clark-NW 1979, and David Pifer, Detroit 1981, both of
Legal Action of Wisconsin; Partners for Survival Award
- State Sen. Brian Burke, Georgetown 1981, and State
Sen. Gwen Moore; Individual Award for Outstanding Pro
Bono Service - Jane Anderson, Minnesota 1982,
Anderson Law Office; Outstanding Lay Volunteer -
Patricia Koppenhoefer, Cooperating Churches of Greater

John J. Hogan, Marquette 1977, and Timothy B. Melms,
Marquette 1993, have joined as partners establishing Hogan
& Melms LLP, Rhinelander. Continuing as an associate
is Jennifer A. Stuber, Valparaiso 1998. Susan Rosenberg,
Marquette 1983, joins the firm as of counsel, continuing to emphasize
personal injury and civil litigation consulting. The firm serves
general practice areas, including personal injury, insurance
defense, family, real estate, estate planning, and criminal law.
Paul R. Gurtler, Hamline 1989, has formed ProRisk
Underwriters Inc., N71 W27166 Hansen Dr., Sussex. Gurtler
will continue practicing in liability insurance policies for
attorneys. The organization will concentrate in municipal insurance
consulting, directors and officers liability, employment practices
liability, union liability and errors and omissions insurance.
The Association of State Prosecutors has elected the following

James D. Friedman, Notre
Dame 1972, has been appointed to the newly created Wisconsin Department
of Financial Institution's Task Force on Financial Competitiveness
2005. The task force will analyze the needs of Wisconsin's
financial instutions and make recommendations on policy initiatives
to enhance the state's regulatory and economic environment.

Carl W. Gilmore, U.W. 1994, has been elected president
of the McHenry County Bar Association, McHenry County, Ill. Gilmore
practices family law with Mohr, Mangiamele, Bruce & Gilmore,
McHenry, Ill.
Kimberly A. Hurtado, Marquette 1988, has been appointed
to the board of governors of the American Bar Association forum
on the construction industry. Hurtado previously served as chair
of the contract negotiations and administration division and
is coauthor and editor of Partnering in Construction: A Practical
Guide to Project Success, a book published by the forum.

Marla J. Stephens, Marquette 1981, has been elected
chair of the State of Wisconsin Judicial Council. Stephens is
director of the appellate division for the Wisconsin Public Defender
Office. She previously was first assistant of the Milwaukee appellate
office and assistant state public defender in the Milwaukee trial
office (then the Milwaukee appellate office). Ruth A. Bachman,
U.W. 1978, has been elected vice chair of the Judicial Council.
She is an assistant DA in Barron County, and previously was district
attorney in Eau Claire county, assistant DA in Eau Claire and
Ashland counties, and assistant attorney general.
The Lafayette County Bar Association has elected the following

Judge Thomas S. Utschig, William Mitchell 1977, has
been reappointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh
Circuit. Utschig is the bankruptcy judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy
Court for the Western District of Wisconsin and his office is
in Eau Claire.

Gregg Hagopian, U.W. 1987, spoke at the International
Association of Assessing Officers 21st annual legal seminar in
New Orleans, La. He spoke on tax exemptions and the increasing
reliance by nonprofit organizations on money-generating activities.
