Rick Congdon, Marquette 1974, Waukesha, recently received a Fellowship in International Development through the Partners of America program and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in conjunction with the local Partners Chapter. Congdon was one of 20 people in the United States and 20 from Latin America to receive the Fellowship. It is given annually to emerging leaders who have demonstrated a commitment in both community and international development and who are able to speak a second or third language.

Barbara J. Cox, U.W. 1982 cum laude, professor of law at California Western School of Law in San Diego, Calif., has been named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs beginning July 1, 1997. She has been at Cal Western since 1987, following four years of teaching at the U.W. Law School with a joint appointment in Women's Studies and the legal writing program.

Jason D. Dabareiner, U.W. 1989, was made a partner of Best Best & Krieger LLP, a firm of 100 attorneys practicing throughout Southern California. He is a member of the business and real estate department in the firm's Rancho Mirage, Calif., office.

Walter S. Davis, William J. Mulligan, Mark F. Vetter and Roger E. Walsh of Davis & Kuelthau S.C., Milwaukee, are included in the latest edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Davis, Vetter and Walsh are members of the firm's labor and employment section. Davis also was nominated in the publication's corporate law category. Mulligan chairs the firm's environmental law section.

Jean W. DiMotto, Marquette 1984, was elected circuit court judge in Milwaukee County by a landslide on April 1. She will succeed Judge John Foley, who did not seek reelection.

Russell S. Long, Southwestern 1979, and Amy Klemm Verbos, U.W. 1984, have joined Davis & Kuelthau S.C. as shareholders in the firm's banking and commercial finance section. Previously a member of Banc One Corporation's legal department, Long will focus his practice on workouts, bankruptcy and commercial litigation. Klemm Verbos also joins the firm from Banc One Corporation's legal department. She will focus her practice on commercial loan transactions, bank regulatory matters and general banking issues.

Ken Friedman, U.W. 1995, an attorney with Health Law Associates of Menasha, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Wisconsin Assisted Living Association (WALA), the state affiliate of the Assisted Living Association of America. WALA provides information, education and liaison with federal and state agencies for more than 250 companies offering retirement facilities and services throughout Wisconsin.

Dominic H. Frinzi, Marquette 1951, president of the Milwaukee Italian Community Center (ICC), made his professional operatic debut in February as "Flora's Servant" in La Traviata staged by ICC and the Florentine Opera.

The Seattle law firm of George, Hull, Porter & Kohli, P.S. has celebrated the 20th anniversary of its founding. Among the firm's founding lawyers are T. Dennis George and Benjamin G. Porter, both U.W. 1966. Porter is active in the nonresident Wisconsin Bar. Vicki E. Orrico (nee Schur), U.W. 1986, and Benjamin W. Dietz, U.W. 1991, are associates of the firm.

George L. Glonek, Marquette 1989, has been appointed Douglas County court commissioner. Prior to the full-time appointment Glonek was in general private practice.

Michael L. Hermes, U.W. 1992, has joined the law firm of Metzler and Hager S.C., Green Bay, practicing in business, commercial and other civil litigation, and general corporate and business law. Hermes previously practiced in Las Vegas, Nev.

Peter J. Hickey, Marquette 1977, has become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been certified as a civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Maj. Michael E. Hokenson, U.W. 1986, U.S. Army, was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for duties as the legal advisor to the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee, which was responsible for providing all Department of Defense support to the 53rd Inauguration of the President. Hokenson's new assignment is at the U.S. Army Litigation Center in Arlington, Va., where he will serve as a litigation attorney in the Civilian Personnel Branch.

Julian, Musial & Friedrich S.C., Madison, has opened a branch office in Mount Horeb. The firm will continue to practice in family law, estate planning, real estate, criminal defense, juvenile law and personal injury.

Len Kachinsky, U.W. 1978, has been elected municipal judge for the Town of Menasha, Winnebago County. He will continue to maintain his criminal and traffic defense practice as senior attorney of Kachinsky and Petit Law Offices in Neenah.

John H. Kastner, Marquette 1995, has joined the Menomonee Falls law firm of Niebler, Pyzyk & Wagner as an associate practicing primarily in business planning and litigation, contract and tax law, and trusts and estates. He formerly was with the tax department of Coopers & Lybrand L.L.P.

Gary E. Lakritz, Marquette 1979, was elected vice president of tax for Harnischfeger Industries Inc., Milwaukee.

Dr. Stephen Lesavich, U.W. 1995, has been included in the 1997 International Who's Who of Professionals. The inclusion recognizes his significant contributions to the telecommunications industry and intellectual property law. Lesavich is an associate at the intellectual property law firm of Klarquist Sparkman Campbell Leigh & Whinston in Portland, Ore. and is serving as outside patent counsel for Microsoft Corp.

Carl Andrew Lewke, U.W. 1983, has been promoted to lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. He currently is serving as the staff judge advocate for Marine Corps Logistics Base, Barstow, Calif.

Lt. Col. Timothy J. Malloy, U.W. 1978, Georgetown 1988 LL.M., has been promoted to the grade of colonel. Colonel Malloy is the Staff Judge Advocate for the 27th Fighter Wing, Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico. He will be reassigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in July.

Sue Griffith McCutcheon, U.W. 1990, has become corporate counsel of Rogers Seed Co., based in its corporate office in Boise, Idaho.

Clifford K. Meldman, Marquette 1956, Meldman & Meldman S.C., has moved and is sharing offices with Randolph E. House. Meldman's practice is limited to family law.

Robert E. Meldman, Marquette 1962, a tax attorney and shareholder at Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C., and Michael S. Schadewald, a tax professor at U.W. Milwaukee, have written A Practical Guide to U.S. Taxation of International Transactions, published by CCH Inc., Chicago, Ill.

Alison Mehlman, U.W. 1996, has joined the State Bar of Wisconsin as a legal editor in the CLE Books department. She formerly was associated with Keith R. Wessel Law office in Madison. Mehlman is admitted to practice in the Massachusetts and Wisconsin bars.

Mika A. Oriedo, U.W. 1994, has become general counsel for the Wisconsin Health and Hospital Association. He will be working in health-care law and is a registered lobbyist with the state.

Pamela Pepper, Cornell 1989, has joined The Law Offices of Robin Shellow, Milwaukee, practicing state and federal criminal defense. She was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin from 1994 to 1997. Prior to that she was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Ruth A. Pivar, Marquette 1991, has joined the Chicago law firm of Rudnick & Wolfe. She formerly was associated with Case, Drinka & Diel S.C. She will continue to practice principally in estate planning and tax.

Richard Podell, U.W. 1969, president of the Milwaukee law firm of Richard J. Podell & Associates, will speak at the Second World Congress on Family Law and the Rights of Children and Youth, to be held in San Francisco in June. Honorary chair of the Congress will be First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Alexandra L. Waeffler, U.W. 1974, has joined the Milwaukee firm of Moertl, Wilkins & Campbell S.C., concentrating in elder law, Social Security and SSI, lifetime and estate planning, probate, guardianship, special education and mediation.
