Christopher J. Brown, U.W. 1986, recently spoke at the Asian-based Inter-Pacific Bar Association annual meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, on the role of lawyers instructed by marine liability insurers following spills by oil tankers in Asia. He also spoke at the International Bar Association annual meeting in Vancouver on legal and insurance issues following a modern Titanic-like passenger vessel casualty. He is a director of Gard Asia (HK) Ltd., Hong Kong.

Mark Butterfield, U.W. 1986, has been reappointed to a second three-year term as chief trial judge of the Ho Chunk Nation Court System.

Nicholas Bykowsky, Oklahoma City University 1977, has been appointed a senior assistant attorney general for the state of Florida in its tax section. Based in Tallahassee, he represents the Florida Department of Revenue in civil tax litigation on a statewide basis in trials and appeals. He formerly practiced with Moen, Sheehan & Meyer Ltd., La Crosse.

Robert W. Cannon, Marquette 1954, special counsel in Saul, Ewing, Weinberg & Green's real estate department in its Maryland office, recently received the Stuart M. Macht Award by the Baltimore county executive, the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development, and the chambers of commerce and business associations throughout Baltimore County. The award is presented for outstanding contributions in the area of economic development. Cannon also received the Maryland State Bar Association's Pro Bono award in 1997.

Raquel L. Engelke, U.W. 1997, has joined McLaren/Hart Environmental Engineering Corp. as an assistant environmental scientist. She will conduct compliance audits, Phase I assessments, due diligence reviews, and assist clients in establishing environmental management systems.

Thomas A. Fessler, Pepperdine 1983, has been promoted to senior counsel for International Paper Co. He formerly was the vice president and general counsel for Dover Elevators in Memphis, Tenn., before joining International Paper in 1996.

Ralph Adam Fine, Columbia Law School 1965, has written The How-To-Win Trial Manual. Published by Juris Publishing Co. of New York, the book is a step-by-step manual on how to win jury and bench trials using two- and three-step modules that work in any case. Gregory P. Joseph, former chair of the ABA Litigation Section, and Prof. James W. McElhaney, columnist on trial practice for the ABA Journal, have praised the book.

Foley & Lardner has created a new practice group to provide a variety of strategic services for clients. John Matthews, who served as Gov. Thompson's chief of staff since 1994, will direct the new Public Affairs Practice Group and be based in the firm's Madison office. U.S. Rep Scott L. Klug, who recently completed his final term in Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District, will be based in the firm's Washington, D.C., office. Raymond R. Carey, U.W. 1992, the director of the Wisconsin Assembly Republican Caucus, will be a member of the new practice group and will work as a practicing attorney in the firm's Madison office. Maureen A. McGinnity, U.W. 1982, a litigation partner in the firm's Milwaukee office, and Daniel A. Kaplan, Marquette 1992, a labor and employment attorney in the firm's Madison office, were recipients of the firm's Lynford Lardner Community Service Award. Georgell also serves as the secretary for the Chicago Chapter of the Nonresident Lawyers Division.

Godfrey & Kahn S.C. has added Scott A. Moehrke and Thomas A. Myers to its Board of Directors, and has named Christopher B. Noyes as chair of its corporate practice team. The firm has offices in Appleton, Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee, and Oshkosh. The firm recently elected as shareholders Carol A. Gehl (securities) and Daniel B. Geraghty (tax and employee benefits). Carl H. Horst, Marquette 1970, has been appointed a supervising deputy attorney general in the San Diego office of the California Attorney General. He formerly served as a Navy judge advocate on active duty until his transfer to the retired list in 1986. Since 1987, he has served as an appellate prosecutor in capital case and major felony appellate litigation.

Henry L. Huser, U.W. 1984, has been elected to the International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers (2d ed.) and selected in a survey by the Global Competition Review as one of the leading international competition lawyers under age 45. He is the resident partner of the Brussels, Belgium, office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

Kenneth A. Iwinski, Marquette 1992 magna cum laude, has joined Northland Cranberries Inc., Wisconsin Rapids, as assistant secretary and corporate counsel. He previously was a senior associate with Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C., Milwaukee.

David Kennedy, U.W. 1982, formerly general counsel of EarthShell Corp., recently rejoined the Palo Alto, Calif., office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP as a partner in the corporate transactions practice group. He will focus on technology transactions, including licensing, acquisitions, strategic alliances, and other transactions involving computer software, semiconductor chips, biomedical, and other technology. Kennedy started with Gibson, Dunn in its Los Angeles office in 1982 and went to EarthShell in 1998 to help take that company public.

Robert E. Meldman, Marquette 1962, an international attorney and shareholder in Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C., recently spoke at the third annual LAWASIA Business Law Conference, "Business Law Development Toward the 21st Century in the Asia and Pacific Region," in Tokyo, Japan. His topic, "Taxation of Cyberspace," focused on how the law of taxation could facilitate, hinder, or prevent the development of the global electronic marketplace. Meldman's practice focuses on tax controversies and the tax aspects of general business and international transactions.

The Madison firm of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP has become part of the Lakeside Group Brownfields Redevelopment Team (The Lakeside Group). The group is a consortium of engineers, planners, and attorneys that restores brownfields for public or private development ventures. Michael Best & Friedrich will tackle insurance and liability issues, real estate transactions, zoning concerns, and other legal issues for the group.

Robert B. Moberly, U.W. 1966, has been named Trustee Research Fellow at the University of Florida College of Law. He continues to serve as professor of law and director of the Institute for Dispute Resolution at the University of Florida.

Shea formerly was an assistant in the offices of Special Counsel for the State of Wisconsin for tobacco litigation.

Gilbert L. Southwell III, U.W. 1981, has been named assistant general counsel of the new Firstar Corp. due to its merger with Star Bank of Cincinnati, Ohio. Southwell will support the commercial lending, equipment leasing, international finance, municipal finance, derivatives, commercial real estate, and special asset divisions/subsidiaries of the new Firstar Corp.

Gay Ann Spahn, U.W. 1988, has become associated with Jansson, Shupe, Bridge & Munger Ltd., Racine. Spahn has 11 years of patent experience and formerly was a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

David P. Spangenberg, U.W. 1990, has become a shareholder in the Marinette firm of Faller, Pleger, Wilson & Schwaba S.C. The firm's name has been changed to Wilson, Schwaba & Spangenber S.C. The firm, one of the oldest in the state, has been serving clients in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan since 1883.

Denis Stearns, U.W. 1992, has become a founding partner in Marler Clark, a new Seattle law firm that concentrates in litigation arising from food-borne illness outbreaks. Stearns also is a principal in Outbreak Inc., which provides litigation consultation for the food industry. Stearns' legal practice continues to emphasize complex commercial litigation.

Susanne M. Stoeckmann, Montana 1996, after completing a two-year clerkship with the Montana Supreme Court, has joined the Baraboo office of Quale, Hartmann, Reynolds, Pulsfus & Groeneweg S.C. as an associate attorney.
