Name That Judge
Q: What Wisconsin Supreme Court justice once served as a legal intern in the U.S. Department of Justice headed by then-Attorney General Robert J. Kennedy?
A: Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice N. Patrick Crooks. A photo of Justice Crooks and Attorney General Kennedy hangs on the wall of Crooks' chambers as a fond memory of the summer of 1962, while Crooks interned for the Internal Security Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. As an intern, he researched and wrote opinions for Justice Department officials. Crooks says the most memorable people he met during this time were Attorney General Kennedy; two individuals who later became U.S. Attorneys General, Nicholas Katzenbach and Ramsey Clark; and U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Douglas. As an intern, Crooks also recalls hearing President John F. Kennedy speak at a White House seminar program. He met, and had lunch with, President Kennedy in 1960 at St. Norbert College.
