Nicholas G. Chmurski, Marquette 2014, has joined O’Neil, Cannon, Hollman, DeJong & Laing S.C., Milwaukee, and is a member of the business law and real estate and construction groups.

Erik B. Ellingson, U.W. 1984, has joined Waupaca Foundry Inc., Waupaca, as general counsel. He previously was in private practice. Waupaca Foundry operates seven iron foundries and two machining and assembly plants.

Kayla M. Gassner, Mitchell Hamline 2016, has joined Davczyk & Varline LLC, Wausau, as an associate, focusing on defense of insurance companies and all forms of civil litigation

Justin Webb, Marquette 2013 summa cum laude, has joined Godfrey & Kahn S.C., Milwaukee, and is an associate in the corporate and data privacy and cybersecurity practice groups. His practice focuses on legal issues arising from the implementation, use, and abuse of technology, with a specific focus on cybersecurity and data privacy matters.

Alison Helland, Iowa 2005, has joinedBoardman & Clark LLP, Madison, and works primarily with the firm’s estate planning, business, and tax groups. She is fluent in Spanish and works with Spanish-speaking clients in these areas.

Corey Lorenz, DePaul 2011, has joined the Madison office of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. as an associate. She previously represented injured plaintiffs in multiple multidistrict litigations.

David P. Lowe, Marquette 1977, has become of counsel to Urban & Taylor S.C., Milwaukee.

Sally Mohr Lunde, U.W. 1992, has joined the Waukesha-based Law Offices of David J. Carlson S.C., focusing on probate and trust administration, estate planning, and guardianship law. She previously was register in probate and court commissioner in Waukesha County. She is the recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Waukesha County Bar Association and recipient of a commendation from the Wisconsin Supreme Court for services rendered in the areas of probate, guardianship, and model form creation.

Joe Maier, U.W. 1995, has joined Foley & Lardner LLP’s estates and trust practice as of counsel in the Madison office and focuses on estate planning, succession planning, deferred compensation design, executive compensation planning, income tax planning, and mergers and acquisitions. He also has experience handling wealth transfers, including multigenerational dynasty planning and grantor-trust sales, as well as structuring new businesses and designing exit strategies.

Tamara McNulty, U.W. 1995, has joined Asmar, Schor & McKenna PLLC, Washington, D.C., as a partner and focuses on construction law. She previously was with Black & Veatch Special Projects Corp. – the Federal Corporation of Black & Veatch – and before that was a trial attorney and partner at an Am Law 100 law firm.

James T. Parent, Hamline 1989, has joined Weld Riley S.C. He previously was with Schofield, Parent, Mayer & Huff S.C., Menomonie. His family law practice includes divorce, child custody and placement, maintenance modification, paternity, adoption, guardianship, grandparent rights, children in need of protection and services, and termination of parental rights. He has experience with high-asset divorces, executive pay, and farm and business division issues.

Appointments, Elections

Joseph P. Bartol, Cornell 1990, has been elected managing member of Stroud, Willink & Howard LLC, Madison, and continues to practice real estate, corporate, and lender representation.

Andrew Hitt, Marquette 2007, partner and chief operating officer of Michael Best Strategies, has been appointed chair of the Judicial Selection Advisory Committee (JSAC) by Gov. Scott Walker. The JSAC advises and makes recommendations on judicial appointees to Gov. Walker. Hitt also is senior counsel at Michael Best & Friedrich and a senior member of the firm’s government and regulatory law team.

Matthew Krueger, Minnesota 2006, an assistant U.S. attorney in Milwaukee, has been nominated by Pres. Donald Trump for the job of top federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Kathleen Rinehart, Marquette 1993, has been appointed interim president of Cardinal Stritch University. She previously was general counsel and secretary of the corporation for Saint Xavier University, Chicago.

Authors, Speakers

Faith Lleva Anderson, Marquette 1988, testified at a hearing titled “Examining the BSA/AML Regulatory Compliance Regime” before the House Financial Services Committee’s Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee in June. She is on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Credit Union Advisory Council and chair of its card, payment and deposit markets subcommittee. She is senior vice president and general counsel for American Airlines Federal Credit Union, Fort Worth, Texas.

Authors of the recently revised The Wisconsin Rules of Evidence: A Courtroom Handbook (State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE^®, 9th ed. 2017) are the following: Michael J. Brose, William Mitchell 1991, Doar Drill & Skow S.C., New Richmond; the Hon. Awards, Degrees, Honors

The Milwaukee Bar Association has awarded its annual Pro Bono Publico Awards to the following: Legal Action of Wisconsin, for its Eviction Defense Project, which provides free legal aid for low-income tenants in Milwaukee County who are facing eviction; lawyers David R. Cross, Chicago 1981, and Brenda Lewison, U.W. 1995; and Marquette law student Jason J.J. Moore. Cross is a partner with Quarles & Brady, Milwaukee, focusing on intellectual property litigation. In his work with the Eviction Defense Project, he helped 30 individuals avoid eviction in 2017. Lewison is an associate with the Law Office of Arthur Heitzer, Milwaukee, and primarily represents individuals in employment discrimination cases and other employment-related matters. She regularly volunteers with the Eviction Defense Project. Moore’s 700-plus hours of pro bono work, a record for the law school, include more than 450 pro bono hours at the Milwaukee Justice Center Family Law Forms Assistance Clinic as a skilled client interviewer.

Richard A. Westley, U.W. 1975, received the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Transportation Lawyers Association, an international organization dedicated to the development, education, and training of attorneys with practices focusing on logistics and movement of persons and goods involving all modes of transportation.

Pro Bono, Public Service

Foley & Lardner LLP celebrated its 175th anniversary with a month-long volunteerism project to help fight hunger. The firm surpassed its goal of providing 175,000 meals across the country through service projects and also raised nearly $80,000 to donate to organizations fighting hunger. Two Wisconsin projects were among those in cities nationwide where Foley & Lardner has offices: In Madison, lawyers and staff helped sort and label food at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin, and in Milwaukee, lawyers and staff conducted two food drives to benefit the Hunger Task Force.
