The State Bar of Wisconsin is proud to introduce to the Certified Paralegal program a General Certified Test designed to elevate the standards of the profession, ensuring that paralegals possess the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in a dynamic and demanding environment. This certification will provide firms with the assurance of hiring paralegals who meet rigorous high standards and who embrace continuing education and lifelong learning in the legal community.

Test Overview

1. Comprehensive Knowledge Assessment

  • Legal Procedures and Processes: In-depth understanding of Wisconsin’s legal system, including court procedures, case management, and legal research.
  • Substantive Law: Examination of knowledge in key areas such as civil litigation, criminal law, family law, and more.
  • Ethics and Professional Responsibility: Ensuring paralegals adhere to the highest ethical standards and understand their professional responsibilities.

2. Practical Skills Evaluation

  • Legal Terms: The test will cover a variety of widely used legal terminology.
  • Legal Research Proficiency: Competence in using various legal research tools and databases to find relevant case law and statutes.

3. Real-World Scenario Testing

  • Simulated Legal Challenges: Test-takers will be presented with realistic scenarios to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities and practical application of knowledge.

Test Fees (non-refundable)

  • Initial Test: $300
  • Retest: $150 for each retest

Testing Windows

  • July 1st to August 31st
  • August 1st to November 30th
  • February 1st to April 30th

Maximum of 2 tests per testing window and 2 attempts per calendar year starting in February
