    Contract Section 1983 Civil Rights Litigation Attorney

    ​​​​​​​​The City Attorney of the City of Milwaukee is seeking resumes for the position of Contract Section 1983 Civil Rights Litigation Attorney. The Litigation Attorney will report to and work at the direction of the Deputy City Attorney of Litigation and the City Attorney. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience and background in 1983 litigation in Federal Court with the ability to support Assistant City Attorneys in large complex litigation matters.

    The ideal candidate will have successfully defended a wide variety of Section 1983 civil rights litigation claims, on behalf of municipalities, government officials, municipal boards, and police departments, including individual employees. The Attorney will have extensive experience in the defense of lawsuits claiming excessive force, false arrest, malicious prosecution, selective enforcement, the violation of First Amendment rights, the violation of Equal Protection rights, and the violation of the rights to Procedural and Substantive Due Process – to name just a few. The Attorney also skillfully can handle Section 1983 civil rights claims arising from land use determinations arising from the decisions of municipal boards – such as zoning and planning boards.

    A Juris Doctorate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association; prefer substantial experience in the practice of law; litigation experience in 1983 Civil Rights Litigation; supervisory experience; and will consider seven years’ municipal government legal experience. License to practice law in Wisconsin, Eastern and Western District of Wisconsin is required.
