    The UW-Milwaukee Office of Legal Affairs (OLA ) is comprised of 4 in-house attorneys who provide legal advice and representation on the wide range of complex and specialized legal issues affecting the second largest campus of the Universities of Wisconsin. The Senior University Legal Counsel (Attorney III ) or University Legal Counsel (Attorney II) position is a professional, academic staff position in OLA . The duties of the position include providing advice on a wide variety of legal matters such as personnel issues, student affairs, public records and open meetings, higher education compliance, risk management, and immigration, among others. OLA also reviews and drafts policies; reviews, drafts, and negotiates contracts; represents UWM in administrative proceedings and hearings; and acts as a liaison with the Wisconsin Department of Justice in litigation filed in court. The attorneys also participate in training and preventive law presentations on a broad array of legal subjects for UW-Milwaukee administrators, faculty, and staff. 

     

    Job Summary

     

    This position is a professional academic staff position under the supervision of the Chief Legal Counsel. The position requires the ability to exercise independent judgment and professional discretion in the identification, management, and resolution of legal problems. The position further requires the ability to analyze legal problems, conduct legal research, and make presentations before various UWM constituents. Qualified individuals will possess the skills to work collegially with a team of attorneys and other professionals.

     

    Responsibilities include the following key activities: ·Completing legal research, fact-gathering and analysis, and providing legal, ethical, and policy advice on complex and novel higher education legal areas including employment law, regulatory compliance, student affairs, business transactions, and risk management ·Disseminating oral and written legal advice to university administrators, faculty, and staff regarding university business matters ·Negotiating various university business-related agreements ·Providing legal representation for the university and its employees in various university matters before federal and state administrative agencies ·Assisting in the investigation and preparation for litigation matters in cooperation with other legal entities ·Assisting in the preparation and delivery of training for institutional employees to provide general advice, education, and counseling regarding higher education legal issues

     

    Hybrid work options may be available. Work will be performed primarily on the UW-Milwaukee campus with requests for partial remote work considered after the initial training period. 

     

    Minimum Qualifications

     

    To be considered for this position, a candidate must have: ·Juris Doctorate (JD) from an A.B.A. accredited law school ·Licensure in good standing in the State of Wisconsin or eligibility for licensure to practice law in the State of Wisconsin by date of appointment ·5+ years professional experience practicing law 

     

    Preferred Qualifications

     

    ·Experience advising higher education institutions or prior legal experience in areas applicable to higher education ·Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following legal practice areas: employment, student affairs, higher education regulatory compliance, real estate, procurement, open meetings and public records, information technology and security, immigration, tax, and/or intellectual property ·Interest in and ability to develop expertise in principal practice areas and other higher education legal issues relevant to mission of a public research institution ·Strong legal research skills ·Strong verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively convey complex topics to clients ·Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and professional manner with peers/clients ·Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and objectives
