2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidates Debate
The State Bar of Wisconsin hosted the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court debate between candidates Daniel Kelly and Janet Protasiewicz on March 21, 2023, at the State Bar Center in Madison, in partnership with WISC-TV 3 and Wispolitics.com. The election drew national attention, and more than 40 members of the media attended the event, including national media from NBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Economist, PBS, NPR, CNN, and The Guardian.
As of press time, the winner of the April 4 election was not known. But the debate demonstrated the role the State Bar can play as a forum for civic engagement on issues related to the judicial branch, the legal system, and the administration of justice.
Good Idea | Hayride or Joyride?
Beginning later this year, hayride operators in Pennsylvania will have to comply with a new set of regulations.
The regulations require hayride operators to use towing vehicles large enough to pull a fully loaded wagon, demarcate loading and unloading zones, and ensure that a qualified inspector inspect the towing vehicle every day while the hayride is operating.
According to NAFDMA Agritourism Convention and Expo, between 2000 and 2019, 160 people were injured and 22 were killed in hayride accidents.

Google has launched a new tool that can help you remove personal information from its search engine. Go to https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/9673730 and click on the “Start removal request” button. Follow the prompts and submit the form.
Google will notify you of any web addresses that have been removed or provide an explanation of why they could not be removed. If you find additional materials after a denial, you may resubmit your request.

– Turnout for the Wisconsin spring primary election
Nearly 960,000 people cast ballots in the Feb. 21, 2023, spring primary election. The 20.5% turnout broke the previous record for a Wisconsin primary election, which was set in 2020 (16%).
Like this year’s primary, the 2020 primary featured Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates.
In the February 2023 primary, voters chose Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Janet Protasiewicz and former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly to advance to the April 4 general election.

On the Radar | Beware Financial Sextortion
In February, the FBI issued a warning about financial sextortion.
According to the FBI, predators open fake accounts on online platforms frequented by children. They pose as girls who are about the same age as the children who typically use the platform, then try to persuade boys to send them sexually explicit photos or videos.
Once a predator has the videos, the predator threatens to release it unless the sender pays the predator.
Sextortion victims should call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).

Did You Know? | Overruled!
Two popular television judges will soon pound their gavels for the last time.
Warner Brothers announced earlier this year that it would cancel Judge Mathis and The People’s Court.
Judge Mathis, which stars Judge Greg Mathis, premiered in 1999. Mathis has hosted a show on American television longer than any other Black man has. Judge Mathis became the first show with a Black judge to win an Emmy in 2018.
The People’s Court, which stars Marilyn Milan, a former prosecutor, premiered in 1997.
