New Hires, Promotions, Partners

Don Daugherty, Northwestern 1990, has joined the Institute for Free Speech, Washington, D.C., as senior attorney after previously serving as senior counsel at the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty. Daugherty has more than 30 years of experience in trial and appellate litigation, has been a partner at three of Wisconsin’s largest law firms, and recently served as president of the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association. He primarily will work remotely from the Milwaukee area.

Eric R. Erdman, Saint Louis Univ. 2010, has joined Lin Law LLC, Green Bay, as an associate and practices in probate and trust administration, estate planning, elder law and special needs, business and corporate law, general civil litigation, and real estate.

Jorge R. Fragoso, U.W. 2012, has joined Milwaukee-based Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown LLP with the criminal defense, appellate, and civil litigation teams. He previously was with the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office and has experience in criminal matters, including trials, sentencing, probation-revocation hearings, and postconviction and appellate proceedings; and juvenile, mental health, guardianship and protective placement, CHIPS, and termination-of-parental-rights matters. Fragoso is fluent in Spanish.

Ari Kasper, Northwestern 2014, has been promoted to associate general counsel, litigation, at eXp Realty LLC, Bellingham, Wash.

Andrew Lorenz, U.W. 2018 magna cum laude, has joined Ruder Ware in the Eau Claire office. He represents businesses and individuals in business transactional matters, with an emphasis on real estate development, leasing, land use, mergers and acquisitions, and business entity formation.

Steven L. Miller, U.W. 1987, has joined Nelson Defense Group LLC, Hudson, as an appellate attorney, working with Robert Maxey, Marquette 2018, in the postconviction and appellate division. Miller provides criminal appellate services state-wide to clients and trial lawyers.

Nadeska Nino-Gomez, U.W. 2018 has joined Zacherl, O’Malley & Endejan S.C., Fond du Lac, and focuses on criminal, immigration, and family law matters. Before practicing law in Wisconsin, she was a corporate attorney in her native country, Venezuela.

Tim Sugar, Hamline 2007, has joined Fiduciary Partners Trust Co. as vice president. He has almost 15 years of combined experience in trust administration and in practice as an estate planning attorney in Madison. Sugar will be establishing a new office location for Fiduciary Partners.

Mergers, Relocations, New Offices

Shimon B. Kahan, DePaul 1991, has moved his practice from Haynes, Studnicka, Kahan & Poulakidas LLC to LaBarge, Campbell, Lyon & Kahan LLC in Chicago. He focuses on civil trial litigation, particularly truck-transportation, retail premises, and construction negligence litigation, and serves as a neutral for arbitration.

Anthony (Tony) J. Steffek, Marquette 2006, has become co-chair of the labor and employment team at Davis|Kuelthau s.c. and oversees a team of seven. Steffek, based in the Green Bay office, assists employers with human resources-related issues such as hiring and firing, noncompetition agreements and other restrictive covenants, disability and ADA issues, FMLA and other leave matters, employee-handbook review, sensitive personnel matters, OSHA compliance, wage-and-hour issues, and labor negotiations. He also provides public entities and schools with counsel on issues specific to them.

Team co-chair James M. Kalny, Marquette 1981, assists clients with collective bargaining issues and employment law matters. He has successfully represented public- and private-sector employers in employment discrimination and wage matters.

Awais Khaleel, Howard 2013, has been chosen to join the Wisconsin Ethics Commission. He is a Dane County assistant district attorney.

Scott M. Paler, U.W. 2005 cum laude, has been elected to the executive committee at DeWitt LLP. Paler, a partner based in Madison, also is chair of the background screening practice group, past chair of the employment practice group, and a member of the litigation practice group. He has advised more than 100 background-screening companies on compliance and business issues and has assisted employers nationwide in creating and administering sound, legally compliant background-screening programs.
